We brought a 36’ class A into this area but you are limited to finding a spot close to the washrooms as any further in with this type of vehicle is not possible. Class B and C can go anywhere and smaller trailers and smaller 5th wheels can also go further but expect a few scratches.

Traveled down further and found several remote spots, many with room for only one vehicle so no issues with being too close to anyone. Lots of cows and cow grates.

We loved our time here. The rocks are stunning an it is almost like watching clouds finding animals and faces in the rocks. The sites are fairly level, be sure you have levelling blocks to drive up on. We had no problem with our 25' trailer navigating the road. We actually walked the road to the west for 2 miles and I could have easily taken the trailer to any of the sites. There were a number of longer term campers than us, but also a fair amount of daily turnover. There are about 17 sites here and over the weekend there were still a couple of sites available.
I would not recommend using this location as a base for visiting Chiricahua National Monument as it is an hour drive each way. For Bowie National Historic Site is only about 10 miles away and is a must visit spot, lots of history.
Had weak T-Mobile service, but great solar and Starlink. Many of the sites are close to the rocks which makes the sun set earlier
Loved it here.

All of Happy Camp Canyon Rd is dirt with the section from the paved Apache Pass Rd to the picnic area being tightly packed sand. At the time of writing, that section of the road was in okay shape with moderate washboarding. There are some perpendicular wash ruts but they weren't a significant obstacle. 15-25mph was doable while towing. There are a series of cattle guards but only the last one within 50 yards of the picnic area could be an issue. It's about 10 feet wide and there is some unlevel ground on the other side. Our lifted 30Ft Airstream made it fine and so did a longer fifth wheel later in the week.
Road quality deteriorated beginning at the picnic area with looser sand. We arrived during a light rain which helps traction on sand (you don't use dry sand to build a sandcastle). If it was bone dry, heavier rigs and rigs without 4WD might have problems. We didn't need 4WD on this go. We got as far as 32.2434743, -109.5071312 with the rig and used that area as a turnaround. We didn't go farther because the visible sites were occupied. There are some scraping mesquite trees the farther you go.
I walked the rest of the road from the picnic area to 32.2431439, -109.5147628 and it gets bumpier but still doable for most rigs if you go slow. There is a deep wash rut right after the big site at those coordinates so I'd consider that the end of the road for bigger trailers. The site right at those coordinates is fairly large and could've fit our 30 ft rig.
We arrived here at 2pm-3pm on a Sunday afternoon and it was already fairly populated. There were still sites available but the best spots were occupied. Several sites could fit big rigs if you can get through that narrow cattle guard. There are a few sites before the cattle guard as well (32.23930, -109.49431 looked good).
We were able to to set up at one of the picnic tables at 32.23853, -109.50017 that still had a good view and some privacy if you orient you rig correctly. It was levellable using standard techniques (blocks). If there is rain in the forecast, watch the washes.
There was a small amount of scattered trash but nothing a small trash bag couldn't handle. No trash cans were on site, there were dumpsters about 15 minutes away at the truck stop. Lots of cows and cow poop but the cows were well mannered.
Noise levels were good with generally only distant periodic jet noise audible until another RVer parked next to us and ran their generator literally all night and most of the day for several days.

I just overnighted here as I was passing through. Nice area far removed from any heavily trafficked roads. I stayed at a site right by the bathrooms and didn’t drive all the way back, but seems Ike it’s no problem as there was quite a large 5th Wheel back there. The road in is a bit washboard but not bad, looks like it has been fairly recently graded. No need for high clearance or 4WD but be aware if rain is in the forecast it could get ugly. It’s open range so be prepared for wandering cows and their leavings. The spot I was in had been recently raked so I’m assuming rangers or other staff are here regularly. I would camp here again.

Main open area just beyond picnic area will be OK for most people. 4x4 highly recommended if you go further. There are also tuck-in sites down the narrow road beyond. We took the first one and backed our 26' trailer in with moderate churning in the sand (4x4 Lo on tow vehicle). Another party in a 2WD F150 got stuck in the middle of the road just beyond us when she tried to turn around by pulling into a wash. Digging around tires didn't help, had to get pulled out by 4x4 truck with a tow chain. Quiet, except for one set of joyriders who went by blasting music over 2 nites, luckily brief. 2 other parties near us. There is a pit toilet, clean with TP.

A lot of people still parked here even though high clearance recommended. I scraped my bike rack on way in, thinking I could make it if I go slow. Still, not sure it’s as bad anymore as last update. Uploaded pics with date stamps so everyone can see. Gorgeous landscape😍
