Its a pretty setting but so many flies you can not enjoy the area. There are a lot of hiking trails for those that enjoy hiking. I read about the fly problem before I went but had no idea that they would be so bad. Warning they are bad very very bad! Lots and lots of Ants also. Pretty location but would not return.

We had a great time at our stay except for the FLIES!! Even looking back on this app October seems to be when the flies are the worst so come prepared. Otherwise the campgrounds were nice and maintained.

Be prepared for a long and windy road down into the canyon to get to the campsites. Low gear is your friend. No cell service once you get down in the canyon, but our Starlink worked well.
We only wish that the staff had given us a heads-up when we checked in and told them we had never been there before. We were staying in the Sagebrush campground, which is closest to the amphitheater where the Texas musical is held. We about jumped out of our skin when we heard what sounded like an explosion, which we finally realized must have come from the show. Would have been nice to know about that beforehand, just so my husband wouldn't have felt he needed to run outside and check things out, lol.
Our site was lovely, but the picnic table was situated quite a ways behind the parking pad, which wasn't very convenient. We also barely fit into the site with our 30 ft trailer and truck. Will look for a longer site next time.

The State Park is nicely laid out with visitors center and a trading post ( excellent cheeseburgers) plus numerous campgrounds. We stayed in Hackberry, site 23, water and elec and was a near perfect site- perfectly level w wonderful views of the canyon wall. Bathhouse was spotless, nice showers, good water pressure. Hubs got 24 hr bug so no hikes but still had wonderful time for 3 nights. Highly recommend.

The thing to do here is hike. I took an early morning hike and opted for the GSL trail which begins just across the road from Hackberry and basically was the only person on it. What a great trail right through the Canyon. It runs for 3.1 miles and then intersects the ever-popular Lighthouse Trail. I opted not to go to the Lighthouse but took the trail back and joined up to the Paseo Del Rio Trail which took me back to the GSL trailhead at Hackberry. About 6.5 miles all told and a great hike.
Would have been great to spend more time here and take more hikes, but one night was all I could get.

Electric and water at each site along with a covered picnic area. 35 miles of trails, bird/wildlife viewing blind at the Trading Post. All of the campgrounds are towards the end of the 8 mile-long road that winds down into the canyon. Nearest gas is off the highway, 10 miles from the park. Price for a site is $25 a night with an $8 per person (13 yrs and up). Not sure if the per person charge is per day as we only stayed one night.

It’s a bit of a challenge to get to, and I wouldn’t recommend a rig over 30’ (although there were some bigger RVs), but the journey is worth it. Electric and water only, and there is no cell coverage in the canyon, but the view on every direction is awesome, great trails for hiking and biking.

I travelled here with a 35’ 5th wheel, long bed pickup and parked in the Juniper loop, site #109, an E/W PT site for $28/night with my Texas State Park pass. Lots of people comment about the road down into the canyon being scary. While it is steep, if you just go slow and gear down, it’s not that bad. There is a bit of a drop off on some of the inside turns so watch your trailer wheels carefully. Roads and the sites were asphalt. This site was a crescent shaped pull-through. Sometimes those can be difficult if the arc is really curved, but I had no issues getting into this one. I still had to be careful due to the large rocks along the sides and would have hit them with my slides if I wasn’t positioned properly. The bathhouse looked pretty new and was very clean and bright. Nice showers. Most sites were totally open. The sites on the outside of the loop seemed to have a little more space around them. I could not see another trailer from my “front yard.” Be prepared for the wind. I could rarely open my awnings due to it. Maybe it is just a spring phenomenon. The picnic table is covered and I had a male turkey strutting his stuff for three hens there one morning. No cell or wifi connection. Did get 3-4 OTA channels which was surprising. I was hoping to check the weather that way. The Mesquite Loop is in a prettier setting, but you have to drive all the way to the end of the park to get there so it’s a tradeoff. Hackberry had a couple of sites that actually got shade (1 & 4.) Great hiking trails throughout the park. I would definitely stay here again.
