A great campground with wonderful views! Make sure you drive all the way down to Mosca Campground. Free electric, although I didn’t use it, and a great little fire pit area. Saw many types of vehicles from big 5th wheels to tiny cars. Highly recommend if you need a free space for a few nights!

Stayed here in mid April. There are 3 loops of campsites, though only A and C were open. Our site was north and east on loop a, and backed in, we had an incredible view of Mt. Blanca, the Sangre de Cristos in general, and the Sand Dunes. Many people camped here only for an overnight. We found it a peaceful place. There were smal... more

Stayed 1 night in February in middle of snow storm! (Our fault) site was a campsite and now a wildlife park but still offers electric hook ups (no water in winter) the electric was great due to us needing to keep our pipes from freezing. There is a camp host which we didn’t see (which is okay) only 2 other rigs in park. Looks to be ove... more

After checking the nearby Shell Mountain BLM and finding it full (not surprising on a Saturday night), we decided to take our chances and drove there. We arrived just before dark to find many sites available. This place used to be a State Park and just became a wilderness area last year. They say they will keep providing electricity ... more

We went to Sand Dunes National Park and checked out the teeny tiny spaces for campers. We knew about this place (SLSWA) and the free electric so went there. We stayed there on our way in Colorado and again coming back to Kansas. There are several sites to choose from, 3 loops I believe, all are pull throughs and pretty level. Elect... more

There's not much I can add to the many glowing reviews and beautiful photographs, so I'll provide some details that I haven't seen addressed and reiterate a few important ones. LOW CLEARANCE ALERT!! The entrance to Mosca Campground is through a covered drive where check-in used to occur. The clearance is 13'2", which is not quite ... more

This was our first boondocking experience and it was fantastic! We stayed at this campground while visiting Great Sand Dunes National Park. Its status had recently been changed from a state park to a state wildlife area and therefore you can camp for FREE on a first come, first serve basis. You do however need to purchase a Colorad... more

“Still FREE for 2018, but . . . ”

Reviewed Apr 09, 2018

Overall Rating

This great SWA will still have FREE electric hookups and an RV dump, but no water for 2018! However, to legally camp there you will need a valid Colorado fishing or hunting license. This is a new Parks & Wildlife Division policy for 2018 and applies to camping at all CO SWA's, not just this one. So, "know before you go."
