We arrived after dark parked in at the second spot on the right. Woke up in the morning to a great view of the mountain. Only 2 other campers where around but all very far apart.
Road wasn’t bad at all, very easy in all style rig.
Very close to the national park which was also a great stop.

Stayed here mid November while we visited the Great Sand Dunes. Easy to find off the road leading to the park. Lots of open sites on main road leading up the mountain. Lots of garbage in our site. LEAVE NO TRACE, people. Seriously. It isn’t hard.
Some road noise but far off. Good enough cell coverage that our kids could stream into their classrooms (family trip during covid so we’re both eworking and they’re elearning) and we could get enough data for work as well.

Definitely the place to stay near the park, particularly in early winter now as the NP campground is closed for the season.

We were the first ones there and had an amazing view of the mountain. There was a few people who showed up throughout the day and some people driving up the mountain late at night. It wasn’t a bad experience just REALLY dusty and REALLY windy.
The turn off in almost gave me a heart attack, the back tires of the rig dipped off a small road over a drainage ditch even though we swung as wide as possible.
You can’t beat the proximity to the Sand Dunes and as a one nighter I would do it again.

Horrible place if your an active person and would like to be able to hike and walk around your camp. I looked at the spots and all where bad unless you like camping in a big circle full of RV's and dirt.

The road did get progressively worse and take it easy over the cattle guard at the entrance as others have stated. Our short skoolie had no problems thogh. There are also a couple of larger areas directly on the main road for larger rigs or groups. We found a nice level spot with a fire ring and despite the heat, we had amazing sunsets and great dark night skies.

Good access to Great Sands. Careful on entry in any sedans as I bottomed out coming over the cattle guard. Otherwise beautiful scenery of the mountain. Horrible sprint coverage tho

We took the 2nd left hand turn and headed out away from the crowds camping on the main road, which would be very dusty at times. Had no problems finding a relatively level site, with an unobstructed view. If you keep heading out on this road, you will find some sandy spots after about 1/2 mile.
It was windy 2 of the 3 nights we camped there, but it was welcome, since it was so hot during the day. Probably not much fun in a tent though. We saw lots of tent campers further up the hill, where there was some scrub bush protection. As others said, lots of OHV/ATV’ers here, so not always the quietest, but even though it was a holiday weekend, we weren’t bothered by much noise at all once it was dark.

This place is mostly used for OHV staging, but it’s a nice place to stop overnight. It was pretty windy the night we stayed.

We stayed there in the middle of July. The weather was perfect. It was close to the Great Sand Dunes. It was a little bit sandy but it worth. Definetely recommended!
