We stayed in site 2 for about 5 days. Had a 36 ft TT and could not have asked for a better site. Had a site mate named Frank that kept to himself and was very stern on keeping the two camper maximum at our site. You can stay for 14 days (or more as long as the rangers have no issues with you) and have great access to Yellowstone and the Tetons. Keep in mind there is no service here and you will have to go to the Flagg ranch inn to get service (which didn’t work for me) or go down into the Tetons off Jackson lake to get AT&T.
Each night was quiet with the sound of water from the snake river in the background. There is no direct view of the river but you are 25 steps from it behind some brush. Grassy lake road is rough but not too rough since I was able to get my 36 ft camper in there. We ended up taking grassy lake all the way to ashton Idaho with no camper in tow. I don’t recommend taking a large trailer all the way to or from ashton directly as it is extremely rough and tight from about mile 4 to mile 15 coming from Flagg Ranch west. After that it opens at around the dam to a wider, smoother gravel road and the last ten miles into ashton ID is paved.
All in all I highly recommend this spot. It is a very busy spot since people like you reading this can find it now. The other campsites are great but if you have a larger rig like mine I would only venture to site 1 or 2. Three and four are smaller with campsite 4 being for a single camper and not very big!

River is beautiful. View of Tetons to the south was perfect. Otters on opposite shore. Elk gather in the meadow across the road and cross the river just a few yards downstream every night. Apparently a “blue ribbon” fly fishing location.
There are numerous campgrounds off of Grassy Lake Rd. Each has multiple sites, often 2-4. Not uncommon for an extra tent camper or two to squeeze in. At turnoff, Flagg campground has gas, groceries and more. Show up in AM and wait for someone who’s leaving. You won’t regret it!
Bring bug repellent for mosquitoes.

This place was awesome! Just minutes from the south entrance of Yellowstone. Close to a gas station and mini mart.
This Boondocking spot is owned and operated by the Forest Service with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and bear boxes. There is trash service every day. There are 9 camp sites available with many “sites” having 2-3 separate sites within them. We were in site 2 which had two full sites within it. We were right on the river where there is swimming and fishing allowed. (With a Wyoming fishing license)
We came in right before July 4th weekend and found the perfect spot! Lots and lots of people drove through over the weekend so it is a well known location. We had a herd of female elk come by about 1/2 a mile away in the meadow, easy to watch with binoculars. There are bears present, but we didn’t see them. Use precautions. We also heard wolves one night and elk in distress.
The first night was in the upper 20’s, the coldest night by far. Storms rolled through every afternoon with hail several evenings. Lots of wind too. We had a TT so we were happy, there were lots of tent campers and we were happy we weren’t them. LOL!
It was the perfect spot and we couldn't believe it was free! The road was fine for TT and motorhomes. Dirt, but well traveled and wide enough. Cars drive fast on it so beware of that. There are spots to turn around, be cautious and patient, but you will be able to turn around if you are brave and drive to the 9th site.
No cell service.

“Road Was Closed”
noted 5/18/2023
Might be awesome in the summer, but as of May 15, the road to any of the free sites was closed.
