We stayed at the #2 site on May 15, 2024. When we first pulled in it was early afternoon. Only 1 tent on the way in. We were thinking it was to be an easy night, traffic noise from the freeway and train was minimal. Great place right on the river. Then, starting about 3:00 that afternoon, the traffic started. We stayed at the #2 site on May 15, 2024. When we first pulled in it was early afternoon. Only 1 tent on the way in. We were thinking it was to be an easy night, traffic noise from the freeway and train was minimal. Great place right on the river.
Then, starting about 3:00 that afternoon, the traffic started. Car after car pulled down to the end of the road, backed in, people got out, stayed about 5 minutes, then left. This went on until about 11:00 pm.
I firmly believe this is a drug handoff area. We saw the same woman in the same car drive past us at least 4 times, got out, walked around the back of her car, got back in and left.
The tent occupant showed up around 8pm. He was tweaking something fierce. He left around 9:30 pm and returned about 11:00.
I would not recommend this spot unless well armed! Which we were.

We are devastated to have to turn right around and leave, but the Mormon Crickets have completely taken over. We ran over many thousands driving through. It’s so gorgeous here though and without the crickets it would be so amazing to stay! So I recommend it minus the crickets. Easy to navigate to as well.

First of all, you have to go to exit 282, and then double back on the frontage road. The directions coming from the east heading west on I 80 are wrong. It takes you to an interpretive site and a construction area that you cannot go through. But once you get here, I would hardly consider these“campsites“. They are two public recreation... more
First of all, you have to go to exit 282, and then double back on the frontage road. The directions coming from the east heading west on I 80 are wrong. It takes you to an interpretive site and a construction area that you cannot go through.
But once you get here, I would hardly consider these“campsites“. They are two public recreational areas about a half mile away from each other, and people come and go throughout the day and evening. Which that is all well and good, but don’t come here expecting to set up and camp. It is simply an overnight spot. In spot number one I got one bar of Verizon and three bars of AT&T and on the other spot I didn’t get any Verizon and only one bar of AT&T.

“Don’t Go To Far If You Have A Big Rig! ”

There are no warnings of no places to turn around. There are 2 large places to stay about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile from a dead end. You get no warning you will have to back up all the way! I got great backing practice with my 35’ toy hauler!
It is a quite spot. No cell service. Could not hear the freeway. Nice by the river.

An OK spot, surprisingly quiet. It was mid-May. Heard mostly crickets and frogs. You will see signs that say “PRISON AREA” just keep going. You will see signs that say “NATIONAL GUARD STATION” just keep going. You will see signs that say “DEAD END” just keep going. I definitely got nervous seeing all this, thinking I was totally in the wrong place but I got to the spot fine. No cell service (Verizon). Would feel more comfortable staying here with a companion, but I would stay again in a pinch.

A note on navigation: I was going west on I-80. Google Maps wanted me to get off early, at the California Trail Interpretive Center. Pretty sure that wouldn't work - just go to exit 221 for East Carlin. Also, Tesla nav thought I could get right back on the freeway from the BLM area but that ramp is closed and you have to go all the way back to exit 221.

There are 2 main graveled areas to park, at each end of the canyon with a few small turn-outs along the road.
We stayed at the western area because it got into the shade the soonest. Quite a bit of garbage on the ground.

We are traveling from Iowa to California and back our goal is to stay only at dispersed camping and although this is only our 3rd spot this is our favorite if we didn’t have to get back on the road we would have stayed another night !! It was easy to find with google maps. The directions took us right to it. I believe this road is actually the bypass when the tunnel is closed and that is why the end is blocked. We went to the second pull over and there was plenty of space to set up right in the parking. We had the place to ourself untill about 9pm another car pulled in and spent the night and left early. There was some huge grasshopper type bugs everywhere but they were very scared of people and didn’t really come near us lol. Beautiful view, very quiet and relaxing !!! No cell service

Fishing here right now is INCREDIBLE. Bring those rods and flies.
Beautiful walk around the bend at the back of the canyon.

We drove along the weird rode that goes under the highway all the way to the dead end and didn't see a single spot that would be ideal for tent camping. We drove along the weird rode that goes under the highway all the way to the dead end and didn't see a single spot that would be ideal for tent camping.
However, it's a perfect place to stop for an hour or so. The river and scenery are absolutely gorgeous. There are cows swimming closer to the highway, that you could get quite close to (but please leave them alone). The water is a perfect temperature for walking in and talking your dog for a swim as we did. I would recommend wearing some kind of water shoes for this because the entire river bed is made up of mossy rocks. We saw remnants of crayfish and other creatures, but didn't come across anything living.
Would be a good place to spend the night if you have a smaller rv or camper trailer.
