Dirt road with some areas having deep, large ruts so drive slow. Overnighted on our way through and it was very peaceful and quiet, with the exception of several gunshots over a period of about an hour. Hunting season already? Our site was nice. The only negative I’ll say about the site is precious camper had burned plastic water bottles in the fire pit and there were cigarette butts scattered. Anyway, we would definitely overnight here again.

I stopped about one mile from Highway 89 before reaching the site listed in campendium. Stopped because it was beautiful and relatively flat. There were two places with with 6 to 12 in deep ruts across the road, but I had no trouble getting across them with my low clearance. There were two other potential pull-off sites on my way here, but one was occupied and the other was not very level. This site has tremendous views of the San Francisco Peaks and a forest Meadow.

We camped a little before the y in the road, we honestly couldn’t figure out which way to go!
The spot was private and quiet. A few trucks were hauling on the road but it didn’t bother us.
Beautiful area!

We were a little skeptical driving up this road at first because there was zero cell coverage. We kept going and came across a forest service employee that informed us that if we kept going, the cell service would improve as the views opened up on the right side of the road. The trailhead for the Arizona Trail is 4 miles up the road, but you have to go another 1.5 miles until you start seeing the really good sites with cell service.
We found a great site with sweeping views of the East Rim about 5.7 miles up the road. Word of warning that some of the sites have fairly steep drop offs. Ours wasn’t too bad, but we still lined the edge with rocks and kept a close eye on our 3yo.
We had 2 to 3 bars of Verizon service although had problems on the third day. No service at all even though our devices showed 2 bars.
This was by far one of the nicest dispersed camping areas we have been in yet. We would definitely come back.

Stayed here for one night. There are a lot of Camping spots off the road - All were a good size and very well spread out. Easy access off the 89 freeway. All roads we went on were accessible and smooth in my VW Passat. Overall very quiet area. There were high winds so we only stayed one night as they picked up in the morning. There are fire pits, but it’s too dry & windy at the time of our stay so no fires. We camped with a 4 person tent, set up a hammock, a cot and a little kitchen area - still had lots of space to spare.

a couple other notes:
- it was so dusty.
- the koa down the road offers BOGO dump/fill for $15, just save the receipt.

There is a mining operation above but no noise other than the water truck and a few hauling the Mag AB material. There is two bars of AT&T but no internet. However, on the high point of the hike to the crater I got internet.
So, cell coverage for AT&T was only good for text and calls, not internet.

Very quiet Ponderosa pine forest setting. Most of the road is easily passable with low clearance. Great place for walks and biking with no traffic or noise.
