The views are incredible and the location can’t be beat for exploring the park. Several excellent trails, including the popular Guadalupe Peak, leave right from the camping area. Parking is at a premium for the trailhead and is often full. You can walk to the Pine Springs Visitor’s Center, although even that parking lot was completely full on the Sunday during Spring Break.
There are no services and no fuel in the area, so come prepared. The area can be extremely windy, so pay attention to the weather reports especially if driving a “high profile vehicle”. Carlsbad Caverns National Park is within easy driving distance and is well worth a visit.
We had 2 bars of Verizon 4G unboosted and 3 bars boosted – although the signal was not always stable.

The RV section of the campground is just a big parking lot with spaces large enough to accommodate big rigs (we're 35 feet and weren't the biggest ones there). There are no hook-ups other than a fresh water tap, utility sink, and on-site bathrooms. None of the sites are level (the campground is on the side of a slope). If this sounds rustic, remember that you're really here to visit the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and boy does this campground give you great access to the trails!
The campground is actually the trailhead for several major trails including the Guadalupe Peak Trail, El Capitan, The Bowl, and Devil's Hall trails. You'll have access to some fantastic hiking right on very well maintained trails straight from your door. We didn't mind sacrificing a bit of privacy and hook-ups for this experience, and had an awesome time exploring the park.
If you're planning to tent camp, there is a tent-only campground just down the slope that offers much greater privacy at each individual site.
Internet and cell service were slow and spotty at times, but still available throughout our stay.

Note: We stayed here in a tent. As other reviews have noted, the RV area is a parking lot, however the tent sites offer seclusion, incredible views of the mountains and night skies and peace and quiet. I'd almost give this 5 stars but the bathrooms are vault toilets (clean, but still...). There are two types of tent spots -- one where you can pull your car up and park next to the spot, and several where you park on the little gravel road and walk to your spot. Both are great, it just depends on how much stuff you have. Each spot is situated to be where you cant really see anyone else camping around you -- and they seem to follow the natural landscape of the area so some are higher up, some are lower, some are built around big trees and some are in the prairie grasses.
The views are incredible no matter where you are, and there are great hiking trails as well. The visitor center has an awesome staff and little exhibition area of plants and animals in the area and are more than willing to help you plan a hike or give you recommendations on your next stop.

I will reiterate the parking lot "feature" to keep things consistent but truly that was a minor thing considering everything else. At our site, #39, I pulled in (33' class A) backwards so our door opened onto a small grassy area with a tree where our cat spent most of his time. There were several other spots where parked in reverse of how they are set up would make the parking lot less noticeable and give more privacy, although the spaces are pretty large so you can keep away from everyone if desired, especially on the end lots. There are several picnic tables but they are not site specific and campers can come over and use them even if right next to your rig. Most of the rigs there when we were were smaller and the spaces along one area will only accommodate <30 ft rigs but there are a few for bigger ones. Midweek or early in the day are better for arriving but while we were there we found people left at all hours. Quiet hours are from 8p-8a so generators run only during the day and only one ran at dinner time while we were there.
We stayed here because it was closest to Carlsbad Caverns which was our primary destination but ended up really enjoying hiking to Devil's Hallway (a 4 mi RT easy/moderate hike). Every day-even the cold and cloudy one-there were a lot of people coming to summit Guadalupe Mountain and arriving back in the parking lot even after dark.
The night sky was glorious and even with the waning gibbous moon the sky was filled with stars.
The tent camping area is a bit down the hill and has better views of the valley and I imagine quieter.
There is fresh water by the registration board so drive around the site to choose your spot then fill and register. You can self register at the board or do so at the Visitor Center several hundred feet down the hill (as you enter the park) and pick up maps and pamphlets. If you register at the VC don't forget to fill with water BEFORE setting up and "some" people have done. There is also good WiFi at the VC but very poor reception up at the CG. Verizon was better than ATT (which is virtually non-existent) but still spotty.
There are bathrooms with flush toilets and a dishes sink but no showers. There is no dump station but we used one in Carlsbad. It is on E Plaza St, on the left just after the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park which is just off S. Canal St/285. It's just a small concrete pad with a pipe but labeled for RV dumping. No charge.
It's an easy 40 min drive to Carlsbad Caverns and there are numerous hikes that have their trailheads here and McKittrick Canyon is a short drive away. IF the CG is full there is a small rest area, notable for its wind powered generator, several miles up 62/180 that allows overnight camping.
The closest gas station is at the intersection with Carlsbad Caverns Hwy and 62/180 in Whites City-35 miles away. It used to be a Shell but is no longer and there is no attendant so it is worth checking before you get there if it is still open. Otherwise the closest gas will be in Carlsbad.
It can be very windy which keeps it cold so be prepared for cold nights. Even during a sunny day that felt warm our MoHo was very cool in the afternoon.

As others have said this is just a parking lot but the views are quite great. Tucked into the hillside it offers some great sunsets and sunrises. We only were here for one night but certainly great for a quick trip up to Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
Verizon was good outside but inside the RV a booster would certainly help.

Oh, and we studied alligator junipers extensively. I think I would prefer to come here with either a really cool back country van, or on foot and tent for days, or maybe if I had a horse or two to lead into the wilderness, because something about this overnighter seems like a cheat and a let down, when I know this park is so much more.
So I guess my five star rating reflects how much I wish I could stay significantly longer for a little more big star, desert trail overpowers my desire for a little less pavement to pavement setup.
We also lucked out on one of the end spots with grass. Site #37, then you get to chit chat with everyone coming off the trails. Thanks for the tip Technomadia!

No reservations are taken, and if you have a larger rig - there are only about 6-7 spots that can fit them. So be sure to arrive earlier in the day to snag one. All of the longer pull thru were occupied by 3 or 4pm during our stay. The spaces are wide, giving you some room to yourself. If you can get an end spot, you do get a little bit of a yard with picnic table. Smaller rigs have some options for spots along the perimeter of the lot.
All sites are dry camping, but there is a bathhouse with flush toilets and sinks, along with a soda vending machine. Not much else here, and nearest town is about 20-30 miles away - so bring in everything you need. No dump station on site, but there are some water spigots around if you need them.
Signal for AT&T and Verizon were somewhat spotty, a booster definitely helps.
