Drove my CTC down hard packed sand and just stopped and parked. A, rare, occasional fisherman would drive by and wave but never fished closer than 300 yards away. Park ranger comes through late at night to check if vehicles have permit in vehicle window. Fantastic place with gorgeous sunrises.

yes its a little tight and slightly sterile as campgrounds go, but half a mile to the gulf of mexico and nice stargazing. get a spot with as much privacy as possible and its a great stay.

It is a parking lot as others have described. No trees or shade of any kind. Spaces are gravel and close together. However, one does not go to Mustang Island to sit in the campsite. The park has close proximity to good fishing, great beaches, and the restaurants at Padre Island and Port Aransas. It is a fair walk to the beach but you can drive to a large parking area There if necessary. Rest rooms are new and the nicest I have seen in a Texas State Park. Select your site carefully if you want the door on your rig to open toward the picnic table. Also bring industrial strength insect repellant! The bugs are ferocious. Check in is currently in a temporary trailer while the hurricane damaged building is being repaired. However, the person behind the counter is very pleasant and helpful. The fee for camping is $20.00/night but you also have to pay a $5.00/person/night entrance fee, so for the two of us the actual cost was $30.00/night. Still reasonable.

We stayed here when normal beach access was limited. Being that this is a state park and access was controlled, we were able to get to the beach with our vehicle when others were not allowed. The park is undergoing renovations and repairs, so the gift shop was closed. The restroom and shower facilities were nice for state park standards and had hot and cold water for showering. There was also areas to shower off after visiting the beach. The RV spots do not have full hookups, but did have 30 and 50 amp service which is something you can’t take for granted at the Texas State Parks. The spots are very close together which may prevent some rigs from extending their awnings depending on how the neighboring rig is positioned. Each site has a charcoal grill and a shaded picnic table. We will be going back due to the proximity to the beach and the affordability of staying at state parks with the parks pass.

Being new to this area and going from recommendation from this site and others, we thought we would give it a try and we probably won't be back. Like other reviews, it's basically a parking lot. No one during our stay, cleaned up the sites when other Rvers left and cleaning the bathroom was basically a firehouse. No scrubbing the walls, shower floors or raking the site. Yes. You have to walk about 300 yards to the beach and you don't have a view of the beach. If you just need a place to dump, refill fresh water and a shower, one nights enough.

After camping for free for 14 days up the coast, this was a joke. Yes they had water and electric at each parking space, no waste. Not even a trash receptacle at the spaces. This is nothing more than a parking lot with back in spaces. There is a dump and trash bin at the entrance. The beach is a hike then over the dunes.

The sites are fairly close together, but everyone was well-behaved and respectful. The restrooms and showers are at the far end of the facility with the park office, so it's a pretty good hike if you're not self-contained.
The Gulf is your constant companion here. You can hear the roar of the surf 24/7, and from our site at the far end of the campground, it was a short 1/2 mile walk to the beach.
A local told me that Mustang Island was pretty much wiped out after hurricane Ike hit in 2008, and extensive renovations and redesign were planned, but the budgets were cut and Mustang Island got very little of the promised funding.
It's a pity. This would certainly be a destination park with just a few upgrades. For now, though, it will certainly be on our list of places to stay along the Gulf Coast, if only for the beach.
