Overview of McCabe Flat Campground
McCabe Flat Campground is the first of three BLM campgrounds within the Merced River Recreation Management Area managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Mother Lode Field Office. McCabe Flat Campground offers 8 walk-in and 3 drive-up campsites and is located 2.3 miles west of the Briceburg Suspension Bridge. Campers should be aware that trailers over 18 feet and large RV's are not recommended crossing the suspension bridge. Potable water is not available at the campgrounds but there is water available from a faucet at the information kiosk near the Briceburg Suspension Bridge. The BLM campgrounds along the Merced River do not take reservations, campsites are on a first-come-first-served basis only.

We had no Problem driving there with our 21 ft RV.
The bridge and the road is narrow, but there are enough pull outs, so we had no problem navigating there. No cell coverage. Just beautiful Nature. Stayed at the Group site 13#.

Overall Rating
This is a great place for dry camping. It gets very busy, and the campgrounds are first come first serve, so if you don’t show up early, you had better have a Plan B. We are definitely planning to come here again. No water, not internet, just the glory of nature.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay here, which included two day trips into Yosemite Park an hour away. Our day we stayed around camp was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay here, which included two day trips into Yosemite Park an hour away. Our day we stayed around camp was excellent. We enjoyed fishing in the river, mountain biking the gravel road, doing some very informal gold prospecting with the kids, and watching mule deer and bald eagles. The visible geology and rock hounding is quite fun.
Now some details:
Campsites had nice picnic tables and amazing raised fire rings with cooking grates. We did not see the bathrooms.
Of the 11 sites here, only 3 would work for a small trailer of RV; the rest are walk-in tent sites. There are 2 campgrounds further down the road that have both drive in and walk in options.
There is a formidable suspension bridge where you turn off the main road into the “Briceburg” BLM area. We are a Tacoma pulling a 23’ trailer, and we were a tight squeeze. I honestly wouldn’t do it with anything larger. The road itself is rough with steep drop offs on one side, but it was no cause for concern for us once over the bridge (it was the old railroad grade into this Gold Rush hot spot). Overall, a really great place to camp for our family.

“Don't go here with trailers over 18 feet”

We tried to go here with a 23 foot trailer, there is a sharp left turn onto a suspension bridge before you get to the camp ground. We couldn't make the turn, and had to back the trailer up to the road, which is a very tight one car road, with a wall on one side and a drop into a creek on the other side. We tried to go here with a 23 foot trailer, there is a sharp left turn onto a suspension bridge before you get to the camp ground. We couldn't make the turn, and had to back the trailer up to the road, which is a very tight one car road, with a wall on one side and a drop into a creek on the other side. Had it not been for the nice people who tried to get by us, failed, and then helped us back up, we would still be there today.

I have a 20.75’ class B RV/can and passed the bridge no problem. Only one site where car can pull up directly to campsite, big and spacious site on river. The rest are tent sites, all look great but could be close together if fully occupied. All first come first serve and envelope payment. Didn’t check out bathrooms as I am self contai... more
I have a 20.75’ class B RV/can and passed the bridge no problem. Only one site where car can pull up directly to campsite, big and spacious site on river. The rest are tent sites, all look great but could be close together if fully occupied. All first come first serve and envelope payment. Didn’t check out bathrooms as I am self contained. Nice river beach, supposedly the sandy beach is just for campers but day use people come up. Wasn’t crowded in early Oct. Super pretty scenery. Was not allowed to use fire pits due to fire risk. The narrow dirt road 2 plus miles up made me nervous but was worth it. Limited cell signal.
