Solo, I arrived mid-day Thursday and passed many people on the one lane dirt road coming in. Only a few spots were not taken, so I chose the one closest to the river w/ a sandy beach. Very quiet, until the weekend crowds started driving through, turning around (at roads end) and stirring up dust driving too fast. Place was packed all weekend in late April w/ perfect weather. Great spot, cuz of the river front location and remote feel; plus it is open ALL year and it is dirt cheap. The hiking trailhead at the end of the road shares ONE vault toilet w/ this busy campground, so the BLM often adds more porta-potties during peak season.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay at McCabe Flat, and saw this campground several times on bike rides. We thought we’d leave a review as there are none yet. It’s very beautiful and quiet here, with interesting gold mining history, and amazing river, etc.
Now some details:
Campsites had nice picnic tables and amazing raised fire rings with cooking grates. We did not see the bathrooms.
This is the last of 3 campgrounds further along the road and gas both drive in and walk in options.
There is a formidable suspension bridge where you turn off the main road into the “Briceburg” BLM area. We are a Tacoma pulling a 23’ trailer, and we were a tight squeeze. I honestly wouldn’t do it with anything larger. The road itself is rough with steep drop offs on one side, but it was no cause for concern for us once over the bridge (it was the old railroad grade into this Gold Rush hot spot).
