We had planned on going to Hapgood Pond, which according to Recreation.gov was available on a first come first serve basis. It wasn't. It was closed and was not going to open until the end of May. We called the Forest Service and they recommended Grout Pond as an alternative, a little over an hour away. We arrived and found that fees did not go into effect until after our departure. Normally, the fee is $16.
Most of the sites are walk in tent sites with a few shelters, all circling the pond. There are about 4 sites that will accommodate a smaller RV or trailer. The campground is open year round but the real season starts around May 15th. The trailer/RV sites were right on the road and not very private, but since there was no one else in the camp ground, there was plenty of privacy.
It's a long drive up to the campground with a decent road, so once you get there aside from canoeing, fishing, and hiking there is not a lot of other activity available. We hiked around the lake but the trail was not in very good shape. It was still pretty wet from the winter. The trees were just beginning to leaf out and I imagine in the summer it is quite pretty. The water situation is not really set up for filling a water tank in an RV. There is a heavy hand pump that takes two people to operate unless you can hang a bucket on the outlet. If you visit the campground, be sure to fill your fresh water tank.
