This has the potential to be a nice spot with a little love. There are some nice trees in this campground which provide some welcome shade. The campsites are gravel, and ours was blissfully level (the last few state parks we’ve stayed at have been leveling nightmares). But it took a lot to get to our campground and then find the spot! San Angelo state park is divided into 2 sections, north and south. We were staying in the north, but you have to go to the south entrance to check in. Then they give you the combination to the lock on the gate to the north side. Would be nice to have a keypad and an electric gate if you’re not going to man the north side. Then once we got into the campground, the signage left something to be desired. We had to park our rig and go walking around to find our campsite. The other downside was that the water pressure is practically nonexistent. But it was quiet and peaceful, and we saw lots of deer roaming at night.

Sites weren’t level and there were stickers where I walked. But I didn’t care because of the birds and the beauty.

You have to register at the South entrance, which about 7 miles away from the north entrance - I figured this out after getting lost in the middle!
The night sky was gorgeous!

Oh, the signage is almost non-existent. We had to ask a fellow camper to confirm that we had found Bald Eagle campground.

I was on a Trans-Texas trek from Marfa to Colorado Bend SP and needed a stopping point. San Angelo looked promising and was open - thank you Texas!!! GPS took me to the south entrance, which turned out to be the only staffed entrance, where I picked up my tags and then exited and drove 8 miles to the north Bald Eagle entrance (just past the equestrian entrance and across the river). I chose site #2 as it was pull-through (and quite large at that) but was rather close to sites 1, 3 & 4, but no biggy. All the other sites, like the Red Arroyo area, are big and well-spaced. Study the park map carefully (links under NOTES tab) as each of the 5 camping areas has advantages. The equestrian area is great and has sites for regular campers and has direct access to the trailhead that connects to the rest of the park. There is an ancient fossil bed along the river though it is difficult to make out exactly where the tracks are. The trails are fun to ride, winding through trees and cactus gardens. There was a campground host who I didn't encounter as the campground was rather quiet but the bathroom/shower house was tended to and had lots of hot water. T-Mobile cell signal was adequate with 9 Mbps down and 6 Mbps up.

I think there are actually 3 different campgrounds in this park. Coming from the north, I turned into the first entrance and the very friendly, but very slow and hard-of-hearing guy in the gatehouse signed me up for the "last spot" available. I wasn't really able to choose or specify no-hookups or ask questions about the other campgrounds or anything. I ended up in site 1, where sites 1-4 are all crammed into a little corner of the campground. I had 3 weekender travel trailers within 20' of me. Plus lots of cars and trucks were driving by in and out of the campground and to the bathroom in the evening and early morning. And this area is kind of on a peninsula surrounded by mud "streams", separate from the rest of the park that has the walking/biking trails. My recommendation: don't choose the northern-most campground. I don't know what the other camp areas are like, but from previous reviews they must be better. Footnote: there was a trail run event in the park, so that might be why it was so full and busy on a random weekend in winter.

Called and found out the other camping areas are 8 miles away. Site I had was water and power with covered table and grill. Shower /bathroom was a short walk away, shower nice and hot. A bonus was the book trading nook next to bathroom.
$4 entrance fee and $20 camping fee, my Texas state parks disability pass wasn't honored since they couldn't find it in the system, would have only taken $2 off.
Extremely quiet, no one else around.

We saw lots of wildlife on the miles and miles of walking trails to include javelinas, white tail deer, armadillo and countless bird species. The bathrooms and showers were clean and heated but a long walk at least 1/4 to 1/2 mile from most of the RV sites. Close to town and all the amenities. The Wash Tub laundry in San Angelo was one of the nicest laundromats we’ve ever used. We also had some plumbing and heater issues during our stay in a SA and used The RV Repair Crew, they were very competent and reasonably priced.
