In November of 2017 we spent one day camped at San Angelo State Park. This huge Texas State Park is built on the banks of the O.C. Fisher Reservoir and the Concho River, near San Angelo. At the time of our visit the lake was so low access to the water was almost impossible! While camping at San Angelo State Park we had the opportunity to check out the Texas state Longhorn herd and the resident Bison herd as well. Our campsite at San Angelo State Park was the most spacious of any that we have ever camped in in a Texas State Park.
This Park is huge! there are miles of paved road surfaces and plenty of hiking trails to keep you busy.
The staff was very friendly and the facilities were very clean. If your travels have you camping around San Angelo Texas This just might be the ideal stop over for you. Check out the blog posts for more great info.

The campsites are large and spread far apart so the lack of vegetation between sites is not an issue. The elecltric and water worked very well. Verizon internet was very good and there are many OTA TV channels. The views of the surrounding plains were very good.

We did not use any bath facilities, but they are available. There is no Park internet, but we did have Verizon coverage while there.
There are two entrances, and we did what I assume a lot of people do, and turned into the wrong entrance. However, the Park Ranger came right out to our rig and gave us a map to the next entrance, where the camping spots are.
If you visit in San Angelo, be sure to see the Fort Concho Historic site, where actual buildings still stand from the 1860's.

I've been to several state parks in the great state of Texas...this isn't one of the shining examples of campgrounds therein.
We had the place almost entirely to ourselves, so that was great. Scenery is nice. Sites are pretty spread out.
Hawks, wild turkeys and mule deer are abundant. But the biggest reason for my lower rating is the yellow jackets. They were everywhere. It's nature, so I'm down, but specifically there were dozens and dozens in the bathroom. All through the shower stall. Get naked and try and shine yourself up all the while watching for a swarm of insects to decide you're too close to their nest. Not a great experience. The water was hot though.
The gate closest at 6:30 (in October anyway) and there's a code to get in, but you'll have to call and hope someone answers after hours to get in or out. Someone did answer and she was very nice.
The bathrooms also were covered in bird poop. On the floor. All over the sink. Dead yellow jackets on the ground.
Just a little cleaning and I'd have bumped this one up to a 4 star.
Also, use the GPS coordinates posted here, don't go by Google Maps. The latter will take you to the south entrance where there are no campgrounds.

Campsites well spaced and varied. This is a large park with campsites in small groups spread around the park. Gret place to watch the infamous TX storms roll across the llano. There is lots of bird, deer and coyote/rabbit activity here. Prairie rattlers I'm sure are around too.
We ran into a local dog club "ANNUAL WEINER DOG RACE" in aanother section of this same park. It was well attended by locals and lots of kids and dogs of all breeds. Dachunts (sp?) prevailed and were the competitors. They put on a great show.
