Driving In With 34ft Motorhome & Tow Was Nerve Wracking However We Took The Whole Road Clear Back And Around The Loop To Settle In At The Second Picnic Spot Going Or Coming In To this amazing place. We have been to South Dakota badlands, never knew New Mexico had their own.
Stunning views, great place.

“Amazing Experience!”

Arrived on a weekday and had the place to ourselves. Got a view in the best spot overlooking the Badlands. It was incredible. Had a picnic table and fire pit on top of a hill overlooking everything. Very easy to get into. We have a 20 foot trailer - great road.

If you use the latitude and longitude in this it'll take you past some much better level camping spots with incredible views and covered picnic tables (these are all RV only i think though, where further up looks like both RV and tent). We spent the night at the Cliffs Campsite, and we watched the sunset then the sunrise. 1-2 bars with Verizon, and the roads have been driven with tracked vehicles recently, apparently while the road was wet, and it's a bumpy ride. Bathrooms on site that were relatively clean, but no TP. Well worth it in this out of the way, beautiful, awe inspiring, spot though.

Nice sunsets. The dirt road in is in great condition (35 mph easily). From what I saw of Gallo cg at Chaco, Angel Peak is better and I didn’t subject my travel trailer to the very ribbed and rough road out to Chaco. I would rather drive the hour and a half to Chaco with just the truck.

On my way through New Mexico into Colorado I needed a stopping point. This spot was great and free! The road in is very wide and smooth, no washboard when I went. There are only about 4 spots that could fit my 21ft trailer. I came on April 9th around 2pm, and by the end of day all spots were full. The overlooks are beautiful though and... more

The second location in is near an oil rig so has constant noise. I’d pass that one up

Road was totally fine, sorry for the last two peeps calling it too washboarded - thought the gravel road was smoother than the highways and made it up doing 45 in the dark easy in my Promaster. AMAZING VIEW. Clean site, adorable rock pathways to ledges. Picnic areas. Somewhere in the top campsites I’ve visited. Loved.

I didn't stay overnight as I had to hit the road early in the morning and I didn't want to start my day being bounced around by the washboard roads. I wouldn't say the roads are impassable by any sort of vehicle, just uncomfortable. I didn't drive clear out to the camping area but I did get to the 3rd overlook (Castle Rock). At that overlook there was a nice vault toilet and a handful of well spaced covered picnic areas. If you don't want to drive clear out to the camping area you'd probably be fine spending a night here. If you're just looking for a place to spend a few hours before hitting the road, save yourself the trouble of traversing the washboard and stay at the first few overlooks as the view is relatively the same no matter how far out you go. I would camp here if I was planning on spending a few days, otherwise IMO it's not worth the drive.
