Overall Rating
Not too bad during the week. Weekends get busy and stacked in like cord wood. We rode our bikes into town. Plenty of parks and beaches to relax at. Good food everywhere especially the blue berry place.

We used this park as a base to visit Mackinac Island for a day trip, explore the town of St Ignace, and have a beach day on Hwy 2 on the Lake Michigan side with sandy beaches. Our site was very wide so we had a lot of room to hang out outside. The beach was rocky with sand mixed in and had a great view of Lake Huron but was not super clear water. Good for paddle boarding or kayaking. Would stay again.

This was our first time at Straits State Park and I don’t think we will return. They have made zero effort to create a nice level pad surface. The sites are nothing but dirt which in wet weather is mud. We stayed in the Lower West area and thank goodness it was dry weather or our site would have been a lake. Just a hole. Very few people stay more than a couple of days after labor day, so frequently there would be no on by you. Still, most campers were quiet. You definitely hear bridge traffic all day long, so it's never really quiet at all, but a beautiful cg.
That's probably my only complaint. The bridge traffic can be louder than a generator. It would be nice to have a designated hour each day to run a generator. They dont allow them so you can enjoy peace and quiet, which I love, but it's never really quiet there. If you are in a non-electric site, keep that in mind. But they should consider adding at least an hour every day.
Almost all had some shade and sun. Yes, it gets muddy when it rains, thats what happens on grass sites. Check the weather report for sure, but they dry quickly. A lot of sites require leveling, but not too extreme. Very clean and lovely sites.
Got to kayak both lake Huron and Michigan if you go up to the bridge. Convenient walk to town and the ferries. Walked around the beautiful neighborhoods and Lakefront Cemetary. Bathrooms were clean and cell signal was good.
Tip for carb lovers, BC Pizza's breadsticks are the best!!!!!
Definitely a must campsite!!

The only thing consistent about this park is that the sites are close together. In the lower campground, few sites are level but most require a lot of leveling and the rest require a ridiculous amount of leveling. The only thing consistent about this park is that the sites are close together. In the lower campground, few sites are level but most require a lot of leveling and the rest require a ridiculous amount of leveling. Our site, like most, were mud pits after a light rain so be prepared. Park has a beautiful dog friendly beach with a view of the Big Mac bridge. It was foggy the first night and we heard the fog horns from the freighters all night. That was pretty cool. There was also some road noise from the nearby interstate but it was not bad. A grocery store is located 1/4 mile from the park entrance (no camp store) and this is the closest park to the ferry's.

We boondocked on site 78A, nice to hear the waves hitting the shoreline and night. Stayed a Sunday night busy, but no issues. Bathhouse clean and newer.

Our first experience at a Michigan State Park and it was very good. We were in a pull thru site with 50 amp. The grass came right up to the gravel of the drive so it was not hard to keep shoes clean coming in and out of the RV. We had purchased the Recreation Passport for the RV in advance. From reading the website, I had thought the “toad” would be $9. The very polite checkin person explained that the $9 was per day and each day of new come/go would be more. So given our expected 2 weeks in Michigan, we spent another $34 for a non-resident Recreation Passport for the toad. It’s working out to be the best as we continue our travels.
Seems like none of the sites have water or sewer at the sites but the park has a “fill and dump” station as you come in. We saw some filling as they came in. We were concerned it might back up as we were leaving with everyone topping off but it was not very crowded and worked fine. We biked down to the section by the water and the mosquitoes were terrible right by the water. There were several 5th wheels a couple of rows back and that seems like a good idea if you go to that section.
There was a grocery store very close where we were able to restock a couple of things. And we easily got in and out of the nearby truck stop for diesel. Didn’t use the bathhouse and forgot to note exact cell bars but it worked quickly. Firewood for sale within the campground. You could hear the bridge traffic during the day. It mostly died down at night and we did not hear it from inside the RV.

Lots of pretty forest wood trails to walk thru and along and great views of the Mackinaw Bridge and the clear blue waters.
If it rains, it would be a muddy site.
Close drive to Castle Rock viewing area.
Very quiet.
I don’t remember exact cell service (Verizon), but we had no issues at all. So it was good.

This is one of our favorite state parks for just hanging out. We prefer the Lower West campground due to proximity to the water and views of the Mackinac Bridge. This is one of our favorite state parks for just hanging out. We prefer the Lower West campground due to proximity to the water and views of the Mackinac Bridge.
This place can get very busy and the sites are quite varied in terms of size, shape and how unlevel they are. Some sites offer a lot of privacy but others are more open. The sites right along the water are spectacular, but note they do not have electricity.
If you have a van or truck camper, note that even the tent sites have electricity available, so consider those if the RV sites are full.
The Lower West campground isn't the quietest campground but the views and atmosphere make up for it -- and a lot of other noises get overshadowed by the crashing waves anyway. Even when full, the closer you can get to the water, the less crowded you will feel due to the way the sites are laid out.
Bathrooms always seemed to be clean and well-maintained. They have unisex shower rooms that are separate from the bathrooms, which we always appreciate.
If you need provisions on the way in, there is a grocery store right at the end of the road that leads to the state park, so it's quite close. Also note there is good cell service for Verizon and Google Fi (2 to 3 bars LTE with decent data speeds) so if you're looking for a nice place to camp but still need to get work done, this could be it!
