Overview of Saddlehorn Campground
A park entrance fee is required in addition to the camping fee.
Be aware that there are three tunnels on Rim Rock Drive. There are two tunnels on the west side and one on the east side of the park. Vehicle lights and/or bicycle lights are required while traveling through the tunnels. Maximum tunnel height is 16 feet at the center line.

This campground is well organized, well maintained, and quiet. Unbelievable stunning scenery from my site. Nice spacing between campsites. Parking for your RV can be tricky as those spots are sandy/crushed stone and not level. The campsites are more conducive to tent camping. No electric or sewer at any of the sites I saw. First I have to warn you the drive in is incredibly scenic but not for those scared of heights. The road hugs the edge of the canyon and winds it’s way up to the top. We stayed here two nights in June 2023. It was our first time dry camping and we had no issues. The weather was pretty nice this time of year (low in the mid 50s, high in the mid 80s), so we did not miss having our A/C. We stayed here two nights in June 2023. It was our first time dry camping and we had no issues. The weather was pretty nice this time of year (low in the mid 50s, high in the mid 80s), so we did not miss having our A/C. The nights got a bit cool, but we were able to run our heat strips on our battery.
The spots are small and the (incredibly scenic) drive in has lots of turns with little space. There are a few tunnels that you will also have to clear on the way in. As such, this camping area is best suited to those with small rigs or tent campers. We had no issues with our 21 foot travel trailer.
The sites themselves were not super scenic, but the park itself is incredibly beautiful. You can take a scenic drive, enjoy the overlooks for lovely views, or hike. We hiked a few of the easier trails (Devil's Kitchen, Coke Oven, and Canyon Rim Trail to Window Rock) and they were AMAZING.
There are bathrooms at the campsite, trash, and recycling. If you need to dump your rig or get potable water, visit the Colorado Welcome Center in Fruita which is only a few miles from the Fruita entrance of the Colorado National Monument.
My AT&T cell service was not good, but my husband's T-Mobile service seemed to work fine.

We camped here in our camper van. At this time of year all of the sites are first come first serve. Generators are allowed in loops A and B, but C is generator free. The rim drive in the monument is very beautiful. Large rigs may find the road challenging. The host was very friendly. Most of the sites are not very level though. There is not a way to dump or refill freshwater tanks at this campground. We dumped and refilled at the Fruita welcome center. The bathrooms were very clean and had been recently renovated. There are flush toilets and a sink.

The road into the campground is narrow, steep, and winding with several 10ft 6in tunnels. That measurement must be next to the curb because there was a ton of room above that and we didn't feel cramped at 10ft. The campground road itself is similarly narrow and winding.
Our site was very unlevel from side to side (>5 inches for our width) but we made do. Front to back was fine.
No dump station in the park.
AT&T service was 24mbps down and 5mbps up with a roof mounted Pepwave MIMO antenna.

Camp sites varied quit a bit. Some are much more level than others. My site sloped so much the front of my 36 foot 5th wheel was down on the ground with backend blocked and jacked way up. 36 foot 5th wheel was down on the ground with backend blocked and jacked way up. The site was so narrow the bedroom slide facing the road was right on the edge of the road. The other site had limbs from cedar trees that scratched my truck.
If I had to do it over would look at the site first and ask for a different one if available. Not all the sites were like this one. This particular site was marginal at best. Have boondocked a lot and not had one any worse.
The road up is paved and provided good access to the site.
There are no hook ups or water. Fruita Visitor Center is closest place for free water.
It was 100 degrees, of course. If coming again would come in the Fall.
Outstanding views in all directions. There is a 23 mile drive thru the Monument if you haven't seem a lot of
big red rock formations before~, would go at least 3 or 4 miles on it for the views as depicted in posted images. Easiest way to camp site is thru Fruita on Highway 340 off I-70, not thru Grand Junction.
If coming again will stay at Monument RV Park in Fruita and just drive into the Monument to hike, bike
or enjoy the view.

Saddlehorn Campground is a well kept campground with beautiful views of the nearby canyon overlooking Fruita. If you are driving through the area and need a place to stay i’s worth it. But make sure you have enough time to drive the 19 miles through Colorado National Monument and leave time to take in the magnificent views.
The sites aren’t generally well suited for large RVs so make sure to check the size limitations before booking. Site 41 was big and conveniently located next to the nice bathrooms (well maintain with automated flush toilets but no showers). It took some maneuvering to back in. The slight slope worked for my trailer but I wouldn’t want to try to park an RV there or many of the other spots.
The weather was comfortable during my mid May stay but there was lots of wind most days (up to 50mph gusts). Be prepared for wind. I felt bad for the people in tents.
There was a fee to enter Colorado National Monument park so add that $25 to the camping fee. Also, I’d disregard the campground website suggestion on how to get there. Follow your car’s navigation directions. They’ll likely send you through the west entrance near Fruita; that is much faster than the east entrance followed by 19 miles of crawling along the canyon’s edge. The 19 mile drive is lovely, but you don’t want to hurry through it as you head to your campsite. Lots of people stay just one night. If you are one of them, I’d still suggest you make sure you have time to take in some of the short hikes and sightseeing as you drive through the park.
If you stay longer, know that internet (Verizon) was surprisingly good.

Loved this park and it worth the drive up to get there. Note that there is a tunnel with a 10’6” height restriction. But the spots were tight, really meant for RVs less than 25 feet. We had a pull off site that was barely big enough for the rig and truck. Nice camp host set up a flashing cone so nobody would hit us. But the views and nearby hiking made up for the site deficiencies. Gorgeous hike into the canyon and up to rim road. No dump at park. It there was a free dump station at Fruita Visitor Center.
