This no reservation "First Come' campground is a wonderful place to camp! The 20.30,50 amp & water hookup back sites are a generous size with most having a view of Marathom Lake. There is a boat launch,as well as designated swimming and fishing areas. Federal Interagency passes are honored, $10 for site plus $3.00 for utilities.
.

The flush toilets and hot shower faculties function however they are sorely in need of updating, Othet than this I found Marathon Lake to be ideal for an overnight or a longer stay, While I was there out of the 34 sites only a third were occupied making the area very quiet except for the sounds of nature.

There a on site camp host who can make local calls if needed. Otherwise unless you have a satellite phone there is no reception. A pleasant addition to the overall quiet.

Be sure to use bug repellent the "No see ums" were very active in June 2017.

Directions: From Forest, go south on Hwy 35 for 8.5 miles to Homewood. Turn east on Morton-Marathon Road and go 9 miles. Turn south on Forest Service Road 520 and go ½ mile to entrance. Another route would be to go south on Hwy 501. Turn east on Morton-Marathon Rd. & go 3 ½ miles. Turn onto FS Rd 520 & go ½ mile to entrance. From Raleigh, go north on Hwy 35 for 15 miles to Homewood and follow same directions above from Homewood. An alternate route is to take Hwy 18 east to Hwy 501; go north 15 miles: turn east onto Morton-Marathon to FS Rd 520.

“What a find not far from IH-20 in Mississippi! ”

On the way to Georgia from Texas, I looked for campsites in the National Forests. I found Marathon Lake in Bienville National Forest not far from Jackson, Mississippi. The campsites were not very private but when we were there, only about 1/4 of the campsites were taken. The site we had was level and clean and a short walk to the water. For those of us who are geocachers, there are several in the campgrounds, within walking distance from campsites. The bugs, frogs & toads were very loud that night but we loved it. The only noise in the park.
