We were on the road from Grand Canyon to Albuquerque and wanted to visit El Morro. This was a convenient location to stop for the night. It's OK. The campsites are kinda all jumbled up and it's hard to figure out where your site is. The campground looks like it used to be paved but fine sand had blown over everything. The utilities are in need of some repair but power and water worked. There were some trashy RV's in the park but everyone seemed to be friendly.
The one shining positive is the view - the red rocks for which the park is named make a very nice view.

Would not rate access very high as there is not an I-40 exit that comes off near the campsite, once in the campground access good enough for the 5th wheel. If headed east on I-40, exit in Gallup onto Ford St to the right, then turn left onto old Highway 66. Drive about 5 miles east to the town of Church Rock then turn left heading north on Road 566. If headed west on I-40 there is an exit about 3 miles east of the turn off. There is the option of dry camping for $10/day. Called the number listed 505-722-3839 inquiring where to check in. Informed to just pick a campsite and call back with the site number and credit card, easy peasy. Campground was quiet and reasonably clean. Site quality varied but wasn't too bad, some more level than others. Hook ups well positioned. The ground is very fine red sand and if windy blows everywhere. Nice hiking trails. There is a camper dump on site and trash bins.
If checking their website don't confuse it with a similar one in California.

This is a beautiful trail that made the stay worth it. But the campground is messed up. Sites are not leveled, on slopes or crisscross with each other. Needs some attention to fix it up. Many folks live here. The other site area near the rodeo space was closed and that area has a convention center that is boarded up. Place seems abandoned. But again with to go on the hike. Was quiet as another positive. And the park manager answered my emails even if they were closed which was very nice as our site was not usable and needed to switch. The online reservation is not to trust as people do walkins and these do not register to the website - so you may end up having someone in your spot.

We stopped here for a quick overnight on our way East. Had reserved site 25 online. An access road to the other loop goes right through it. We drove around and finally found site 112 that was big enough & level enough to stay hooked up, but was surrounded on 3 sides by road. The lady in the office was very nice to change it. Lots of traffic going to the PO until it closed at 5. The power pole is on the wrong side for half the sites as they grouped the poles side by side in pairs. The sitemap online is worthless for determining a good site as it doesn't resemble what is here. Would recommend calling and asking the lady for advice, Luckily, the park was half empty so we could move. We were going to use water but it looked like mud -- thankfully, we tried it before hooking up. Overall, the sites were dirt with many washed out and unlevel, Would stay again strictly for convenience. The surrounding rocks are beautiful.

Conveniences in nearby Gallup including a myriad of souvenir shops. visited El Malpai and El Morro National Monuments which both had great visitor centers.
The red rocks were awesome and hiking trails were a plus. Excellent AT&T service, Verizon was barely functional. It was 'ok' but not likely to stay again.

Don't even know where to begin. I booked the site well in advance and when we arrived there was a camper in the spot I booked. There was still someone in the office who said it was the computer's fault that the spot I picked was for a monthly rental. We took the spot next to it and as other reviewers stated had to wait for a park ranger to bring us a bathroom key. If you arrive after 4 you probably can't get one. There was so much wrong with this park, I could go on forever. Didn't like the smell even with rules the monthly users did allow raw sewerage to drain from their rigs, the feral dogs made the rattlesnake and centipede we encountered seem like nothing. My husband had to shovel the dog crap away from our rig so we wouldn't step in it. I think you get my point. Yes, if you can handle the altitude the hiking would be incredible but it was a little to high for us to do the nearby hikes.

And, we couldn’t find a camp host. Also, drove around our loop a couple of times to find our site. Numbers didn’t seem to follow a logical pattern. Was glad we weren’t looking for our spot in the dark. Because I treated it like an overnight stop, I didn’t explore. My mistake. As we we’re leaving, I saw Church Rock Trail (2.6 mile moderately trafficked). Looks like I missed a nice one!

The sites further back in the park away from entry road seemed higher and better condition. Our site was level enough that we did not have to unhitch. Feral dogs immediately “greeted us” and harassed our dog when we walked him. Sites are poorly labeled and it’s hard to tell where to park. I felt a bit uneasy about the environment but there were a lot of upscale trailers too so wouldn’t say we felt unsafe. However will find another place to stay in the future.

great scenery...but the place is a dump.. feral dogs roaming the campground....several RV have set up permanent residence there and they are run down and unsightly. Sites are poorly marked and is reminiscent of a homeless camp.. I'm sure the city of Gallup cleans up the place when major events are held...never again

Roaming dogs. Apparently this is a thing in this area but about 3-5 dogs roam through and pee and poop all over. Everytime I took my daughter or my dog out of my camper they would come bounding over. They seem cared for and nice, but I don’t mess around with dogs I don’t know so that did bother me.
We didn’t hike but there are two trails I will post pictures of info. We went into town, very sad feel - most things closed, they are mask crazy here so we didn’t go in any shops except one Laundromat since there is no laundry here on site and then into the auto parts store. Lots of homeless and hitch hikers. Construction. Trains go through constantly but you don’t hear them at the park. Casino just reopened. Not much to really do so it was a stop off for us to dump, fill & do laundry.
