Someone mentioned orange water in an earlier review but we didn't experience that.

Great Durango Basecamp... sometimes you just need a place to park the rig close to adventure. La Plata County Fairgrounds is perfect for that. Great access to fantastic river bike path. As indicated in previous review, come in at the main entrance, not the entrance to the community center. If you have a bigger rig, hopefully the parking lots are not packed as it makes the turns into the campground a lot easier. Check it out in Google Maps first.

The location of this County Fairgrounds really can't be beat. If you want to be in downtown Durango- walking, biking, short car ride distance from everything, this is your spot.
Hookups are water and electric only, but there is a bathroom & shower that is open daily from 8am-10pm.
The nearest dump station is the Speedway on the 160 West of Durango.
Note: the Rodeo comes to the fairgrounds every Wednesday night in the Summer and you are not allowed to stay during the Rodeo. So there are no Wednesday night rentals. Plan your stay accordingly.

There are two entrances to the fairgrounds and the one at 27th will take you to a parking lot with some very tight turns that might be difficult for motorhomes to navigate. So enter the parking lot on 25th St and the check-in office will be in the building on your right. There is still another parking lot to navigate, but it was much less crowded while we were there.
Even though this is just a gravel parking lot we really enjoyed our stay here. It's a perfect location for exploring Durango and the surrounding areas. There is a great walking/biking path that runs along the river that you can access from the fairgrounds. Downtown/Main St is just a mile or two down the road and there are plenty of great shops and places to eat. We used this as a base to explore The Million Dollar Hwy, Silverton and Ouray.
The RV parking spaces have quite a bit of room between them and the gravel parking lot is level and big enough that parking any size rig in here should be a breeze. The RV parking area is fenced and far enough from the main street that it was quiet and seemed very safe and secure. There are also 2 fenced ball fields that were unlocked and not being used while we were there so we were able to let our pup run around in one.
The night we arrived there was a rodeo going on and we were able to walk to and from the stands right from our trailer. The RV parking area is also where the rodeo competitors park, along with all the bulls and horses, so you're sorta "back stage" at the rodeo. Some people may not love this, but we really enjoyed it.
The water spigots are shared between two or three sites, so you might want to be prepared with a 2 or 3-way splitter just in case.
No wifi, but cell service was very good.

Was raining, so didn’t scout out the river path, plus was having issues with altitude. Our neighbor encroached on our site—rug, table & chairs, and truck! Spaces are clearly defined by yellow posts. Didn’t know where to go at first. Drive past office and around arena to see gated area on the right.

We didn’t make a reservation and just stopped by to see if they had any availability, and they did for one night (July 3rd 2019). Nothing special at all as far as accommodations, but being able to stay in Durango for $25 was exactly what we were looking for. The camp area is a large gravel lot with water and electric at the sites. They have a rodeo on Wednesday nights in the summer (which was the day of the week that we happened to be there), so it can be a little dusty/noisy for a few hours, but you get to see a rodeo for free, which was a nice bonus for us while traveling with kids. There is also a nice bike path that follows the Animas river that you can pick up right out of the camping area. Also, there is a large playground directly behind the camp area (at rec center).
