5 stars usually goes to places I’m DYING to go back to but honestly no real complaints. I came in super late (1am) and found it super easy to find and get settled. Take the left at the sign and drive till you find the trailhead. Level parking, covered picnic area, fire ring, etc., just as others described. The morning made for lots of ... more
5 stars usually goes to places I’m DYING to go back to but honestly no real complaints. I came in super late (1am) and found it super easy to find and get settled. Take the left at the sign and drive till you find the trailhead. Level parking, covered picnic area, fire ring, etc., just as others described. The morning made for lots of day hikers but otherwise a pretty chill and safe spot to crash before heading north to Glacier Park.

We stayed right by the trailhead with our Class A 36ft motorhome. There are NO bathrooms, and access to any camping spot away from the trailhead would be very difficult, bumpy, etc. Nevertheless, we really enjoyed our stay! It wasn't what I would call "beautiful" but if you like the desert or lava rock, you'd likely enjoy this quite a ... more
We stayed right by the trailhead with our Class A 36ft motorhome. Fairly easy access along a narrow gravel road. We stayed at the trailhead where the opening was large and flat, with a covered picnic table and large porta potty. Fairly easy access along a narrow gravel road. We stayed at the trailhead where the opening was large and flat, with a covered picnic table and large porta potty. We enjoyed walking around on the lava field and watching the sunset. One night there was someone shooting a few miles away which was noisy but otherwise the site was quiet. We did seem to have more flies and gnats invading our trailer while parked there which was very annoying.

This is a great stop if you are looking for a quick overnight. When you first turn off the highway stay to the left of the main sign on the gravel road. There is a pull out up on the left which can accommodate any size RV, if you can get turned around. If you continue on the gravel road to the fork and turn left you will come to the... more
This is a great stop if you are looking for a quick overnight. When you first turn off the highway stay to the left of the main sign on the gravel road. There is a pull out up on the left which can accommodate any size RV, if you can get turned around. If you continue on the gravel road to the fork and turn left you will come to the main parking lot which has plenty of space for at least two RV's of any size. In the main parking area there is a covered picnic area and large porta-potty.
If you are in a camper van or tent you could take a right at the fork and turn down the dirt road. However be aware the two roads are not a right lane and left lane. They are newer road and older road. The old road on the right is rutted and abruptly ends without merging into the left road. There are a few smaller sites which are very spaced out. The sites aren't large enough for more than a camper van, tent or very very small travel trailer.
If you attempt to go down the dirt road on the right of the fork with anything large you won't be able to turn around. After a very bumpy section the road will turn to the right and meet up with another road. If you turn right on this road it will lead back to the main entrance and gravel road. However be aware the road again is split into two roads. The road on the right is not suitable for travel. Stay on the newer road on the left which is much flatter and less rutted.
We only had 1bar of LTE with AT&T. But our router was able to stream TV.
The hiking trail along the lava beds is only about a mile long and took us 40 minutes with kids (8 &10) and isn't very well marked.

Agressive wasps came at us right after we parked. Was hoping to stay the night here but wasps are swarming for some reason. easy gravel road, go to the left at the sign not the dirt road to the right. Neat 1 mile hike around a lava field, and to do some route finding and saw a rattlesnake. Beautiful sunset. Clean handicap accessible porta potty, covered picnic area, grill, and metal fire pit. Saw some camping areas down the dirt road also.

We had a great time climbing around on the lava. Lots of lave tube caves to explore. Had a fire in the evening in the metal fire pit. Saw neowise Comet at night. Great star gazing location.
Only downside is the road noise in the morning.

Came from Portland OR, 6:00am (pacific time) departure, to Craters of the Moon NM campground 7:30 MST. 51 first come first serve sites all full! No big surprise, drove the Lava loop road, so we could say we were there. Get back on road, to top of hill and ,YES , opened Campendium. So it was 40 minutes more driving or even 20 more minut... more

So it was 40 minutes more driving or even 20 more minutes to WalMart in Idaho Falls (yuk), or bush wack site on Nuclear testing grounds (not a glowing idea) This site offered remote, great star gazing, all alone, camping at its ID flatlands best!!
When you come in off road in pitch black dark, stop at identification sign and take gravel road to your left not rutted out 4x4 path to right:)Entrance road and parking area just as others have described. Great layover, isolated, quite, sleep in late spot. Tetons tomorrow

We stayed here 5-18-19 and really enjoyed it. It is just a plain gravel lot with room for one or two trucks and trailers. We had no issue turning around with our 22 foot triler and long truck while there were 3 other passsenger cars there. We stayed here 5-18-19 and really enjoyed it. It is just a plain gravel lot with room for one or two trucks and trailers. We had no issue turning around with our 22 foot triler and long truck while there were 3 other passsenger cars there. The road in was very wet and the puddles looked daunting at first, but the entire road is a nice gravel that keeps traction easily.
I don't know if a class A with a towed vehicle would be able to turn around if the lot was full with day use hikers, but a trailer would be easy. the lot is nothing special although it is level and the traffic is minimal.
We didn't have service at the trailhead pretty much at all, but if you drive back to the first T in the road it is full bars.
If you don't mind a few people coming and going during the day this place is great!
