We stayed here in mid September, and arrived on a Wednesday, to find the campground totally empty; so we had our choice of sites. We chose the last one, #15, a pull through, mostly as it had a clear view of the river from the picnic table. We also hung our hammock between 2 trees and had a water view. This site was large enough for 2 rigs. Only downside was it was lumpy...the other sites were much more level.
The 2 vault toilets were immaculate, and had been cleaned earlier in the day.
The camp was conveniently located near paved road 3960, which we took to reach the trailhead for the "Blue Hole" hike, located at the Indian Crossing horse camp. Nice easy hike upstream along the river. Other hikers were outfitted for the elk bowhunting season. Possible boondocking sites were located off the road to the trailhead too.
No cell service, but we were able to pick up an Idaho AM talk radio station.
With our senior card, we paid half the normal rate of $8. We would definitely stay here again... it was my husband's favorite campground.

We took a chance and decided to drive from Spokane, Wa to this area and luckily we found a great spot! We looked at the other campsites in the area and this was by far the most private and had larger spots. Site #2 had two different trails leading to two separate little areas to play in the water. The pups had a great time and we contributed to a rock wall someone started before us. We even had a bed of straw to put our tent on that was shaded by the trees! I recommend bringing your own water though. There is water at the campsite over but it’s a workout to pump enough for multiple people and it’s discolored because of the various elements. Just in case you have a picky person.

Take a drive on the wild side by starting in Imnaha and following the Upper Imnaha River Rd to this splendid rustic National Recreation Area Campground (35 scenic miles). If you've come by way of Imnaha, surely you've been bold enough to drive up to Hat Point Lookout. While you're at it, don't miss the Hells Canyon Overlook which is only 7 miles away from Blackhorse.
When we arrived in the first week of June 2016, Blackhorse hadn't been serviced by park personnel yet, but we saw that they were just finishing up at Ollokot which is the next campground down the road.
Water is available at Ollokot campground, just down the road (a water hydrant sits near the entrance). Blackhorse has two vault toilets, generously spaced gravel pads. It's right along the Imnaha River which is great fishing. We noticed new picnic tables at many of the sites.
While there was no fee posted when we drove through, Ollokot has an $8 fee. Since these are seasonally operated and not maintained during the off season, it's likely that both charge the same as they are both managed by the same entity. Free wood is available throughout the campgrounds in this area, as the rounds are left behind for campers to burn or split after the winter cleanup.
There's no cell phone reception in the valleys in this area, but if you drive up to one of the overlooks, you'll have great service. Plus the views, the views!!!
