It's difficult to find a site next to a rushing creek but this dispersed camping area has just that.
(Note: sites are not formally numbered but I will be referring to them in the order they appear from the National forest line.)
To reach the area one must exit highway 24 to the long side road 7. It's a long drive to the entrance of the National Forest property through the private neighborhood of Massive Lakes. The drive is easy though. The two lane road is paved and maintained until approaching the National forest land. It changes to maintained one lane gravel at this point. The road up to the 12th site is very well maintained as it travels over Weston Pass to BuenaVista (there is more dispersed camping on the other side of the pass as well, see entry for South Fork South Platt River). Past the 12th site it requires a vehicle with clearance and narrows.
The only turn around areas are the sites themselves so be sure to scout before entering with an RV.
The area is very hilly but the sites themselves are mostly flat. The first two sites are very large and could easily accommodate a 30 foot travel trailer turn around. As you drive to the back of the area in general the sites become smaller.
Creekside sites: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14
Pond site: 9
Shaded sites: 6, 7, 8, 9, 12
Pull through sites: 2, 3, 4, 6
If you can make it up the rough hill to site 15 you will be rewarded with an amazing creekside valley view featuring Horseshoe Mountain. We missed the main wildflower bloom but it was evident that this last site was surrounded by wildflowers just weeks earlier.
In general the area was well trafficked with Jeeps and OHVs going over the pass. We had no Verizon coverage once entering the Massive Lakes neighborhood.
