“Beautiful Lake”

Reviewed Jun 06, 2018

Overall Rating

This spot was perfect! We are camping in a Subaru Outback traveling cross country. This little hidden spot is beautiful and way out on a dirt road through the hills to the lake. When we got here there were a few RVs parked at other sites which made us feel very safe. There are fire pits here but you have to buy their wood at the visitor center BEFORE coming down to the site. It’s about a 20 minute drive from the visitor center to the camp site.

“Great free boondocking in Western South Dakota!”

This is one of those hidden gems. Beautiful spot right on the water well maintained (mowed) area with spectacular sunsets (Can't believe it's free!). Each site has a fire pit with grate, with firewood when we were there in Aug of 2017. Easy access 10 mins away from Hot Springs. Right across the reservoir from a cell tower so phone & data service are great.

There are four primitive campsites on the WEST side of the lake which are free.

The EAST side of the lake has paid camping ($18 plus state park entrance fee) with about two hundred paved sites with electricity, shower houses, dump station, playground, canoe rentals, etc. The paid campground is full almost every weekend during the summer.

The free camping on the west side is a grassy area next to the lake with fire rings. The free campsites do not take reservations. The nearest store is Hot Springs. There is a pit toilet. Boat ramp nearby. Fishing for walleye. Take Highway 71 south of Hot Springs for about 5 miles. Turn left on Sheps Canyon Road (gravel) for about 4 miles. Turn RIGHT just past the trailer court. Continue about three miles. Usually empty during the week. Fills up on weekends with fisherman who also can be quite noisy late into the night. State park entrance fee not required for this campground only.

There is a cell tower within sight across the water so AT&T & Verizon have great cell and data speed.
