This is a great campsite, very quiet and right on the water. The road from the 71 is dreadful. 6 miles of rutted washboard, the last 2 we’re ok!
There are clean pit toilets and water at the horse campsite.

They are still dry sites. Sites have no shade. Cost is $11/night plus the $8 daily or $36 annual SD Park Entrance License per vehicle. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are not reservable. They are paid using a self registration envelope.

Dry camping. Spot level where we were. Water down the embankment. Can see cell tower across the lake. Quiet. Lots of poop flies.

Really nice views and lots of space to spread out, though it was fairly busy. Vault toilet was clean and stocked, and some sites had picnic tables and fire rings. Lake was really clear and beautiful. No trees around though, so no shade.

NOTE: If you have small kids or like to let your dogs off leash this site is not for you. The entry road runs parallel to the campsites and the locals drive very fast down the dirt road. Oh, also not a site for you if you like to open your windows as all of the dust from the road rolls right into your windows. Since we were here midweek we didn’t think that we would encounter this. Best to come midweek in off season I guess.
There was a lot of food trash all over our site. Sites are fairly close together.

Arrived late afternoon on a weekday heading into the Black hills with the family. There's still snow on the ground and slightly muddy all around. We finally found a decent site to rollout the ground tent and setup for the evening.
Notice there's trash left in several firepit rings. Whomever brought their dog didn't pick up after their dog poop either. Did some cleaning around the camp site we picked, just so my kids can move around without stepping on dog poop and getting cut by bottle glasses. Picked up some of the trash and place them in the garbage bag to be carry out the next day.
My favorite thing is there's no one else in sight causing noises and making a ruckus. Just enjoying nature with my family and teaching my kids how to make fire. Enjoyed a peaceful night with a perfect view of the reservoir/lake.
Only suggestion is, pick up after your trash and your dog poop please. Would hate to have this place shutdown due to other's irresponsibility.
Would we camp here again? Possibly, hopefully the sites are cleaner next time around.

Loads of space for rigs large and small. These are primitive campsites so you will need to bring food and water, but the views from some of these campsites are truly spectacular. I went for beachside instead of a view, but your mileage may vary.

This is a nice lake but it seems some of the people who visit here do not pack out their trash. The vault toilet was clean. We had cell phone and internet most of the time at the lake.

This was a beautiful over-nighter spot that turned into half of our next day since we loved it so much! How can you beat FREE on the water?! Sites aren’t level and the road to get there is very long, although well maintained and easily navigated, even with a big rig. But those are the only negatives. There is a fire ring and a generous sized lot for each camper and all are spaced well enough for privacy. I would definitely stay here again.

“Closed temporarily to rebuild road as of 5-16-2022”
noted 5/16/2022
Large Sites are flat and spread out and on the lake. Fire rings and tables. They are rebuilding the road as of 5-16-22. Unsure when it will reopen, call or scout ahead. Horse camp sites are jammed together and by reservation only. Dry camping. Good Verizon.
“Closed”

The road here is closed and under construction.

They just voted to make these Angostura sites pay sites starting 2022. They'll be $11/night. https://frcheraldstar.com/news/2984-gfp-approves-camping-fees-at-sheps-canyon-lakeside-use-area
