All sites have a covered patio with picnic table and grill. No fire pits. The lake is not in view of the campground. I'm not a hiker but it looks like a good place to do some hiking. Good enough cell signals - Verizon 23mbps down, 16 up. ATT 32 down, 8up. Many flies the day I was there.

The problem that I encountered at this park was solely the trash cans. The cans next to my site 11 were less than 15 ft. Both large cans were half full when I arrived. They use the cheapest thinnest bags as a liner. The lids are cheap and easily opened by animals. Every morning I had to get up to embarrassing trash all over the ground. I had to pic up or watch it blow down to the lake. I tried moving the trash from torn bag to the one that wasn’t so bad. Although 3/4 empty it was to heavy to lift and it started to tear even more. When I was moving the trash I noted dozens of doggie bags which explain the thousands of flies. Although I have a screen so many still got in my van. I have stayed at 11 NM parks now and this was absolute worst. I watched a female ranger or volunteer open the trash saw the large amt of trash, torn bag and just put the lid back down. Besides the horrible flies another female or maybe same person drove a riding lawnmower right next to my solar panel which could be destroyed by a stray rock. I asked myself what the hell am I staying here for. Management needs to go over to City of Ricks and Rockhound State Parks and just see exactly how they handle their trash. Night and day. I would rather walk to a dumpster rather than have this trash right next to my van.

We used this state park as a base for our alien adventures into Roswell. About 30 minutes from town, but offered great night skies and amazing sunsets.
Site 22 is back in, perfectly level, (we did not even need our leveling ramps) and packed gravel and sand. It was a great surface for the sporadic rain we received during our 2 days. Campsite had a covered picnic table, charcoal grill and was a great sized pad for our rig.
There were a lot of flies during the time of year we were there early October and the bathhouse was still being remodeled so you needed to use the day use restrooms near the lake. Weirdly the restrooms had no soap or hand drying options :(
Road is in narrow, a few bumps, and does not have much signage to guide you to the campground. As you enter the park about two miles in the sign will tell you to turn right which goes down the hills and wraps around. Although if you went straight (it is a two lane road for traffic both ways) you will end up at the campground as well as it's just one big loop around the park.
If you reserve online, you just go directly to your spot, there is no need to stop anywhere else or formal check in process. Your site will have a little 3x5 notecard on the post with the dates of your stay and your name.

Biggest CON: the grounds are infested with stickers, big gnarly goat head stickers. My dogs can’t walk anywhere without getting stuck.

After getting settled into my site... NO Wi-Fi ! Walked up to talk to the camp hosts, who said their Wi-Fi worked great... then turning to his Wife, and had an ah-ha moment. Some of the park buildings were being re-built, and the Wi-Fi antenna system had been taken down.
My site was nice, but very sketchy T-mobile service. But the Showers/Restrooms were nasty (seems to be a New Mexico Park thing?
This would be a good place if you have kids... playgrounds, swimming beach at the lake, although the picnic table area that surrounds it was also filthy.

Our first time here and at a NM state park. We bought a state park pass and it is well worth the money if you plan to visit a handful of them on your journey through the state! Pays for itself in no time! Easy access into the campground, though the dump station, if busy, can lead to bottlenecks for normal traffic flow, as it’s right at the entrance drive. Being early spring, this is a peaceful campground, though the recreation area was quite busy over the weekend. Camp hosts are friendly and ready to assist if needed. This is actually the very first NM state park. Yes, it is dated, but they will be making improvements throughout the campground. Our gravel pull through site (#32) is level. Enjoyed the water and electric hookups, though the water pressure is almost too strong. A sturdy shelter with picnic table on slab. Enjoyed the wetlands trail across from the campground and The Bluff Trail that runs .86 miles from Lea Lake to Pasture Lake. A very interesting place to explore!
