We stayed here for an entire week in March. I was a bit anxious about how close to RM 170 it is. It turns out, that was not as issue at all. The road is not terribly busy, even during spring break. In the mornings, between 9 and 10, there will be vans with canoes headed down to the river. And throughout the day, folks pull in to look at the river or use the toilet. There is a composting pit toilet that TPW keeps clean and stocked with toilet paper.
While here, we visited the interior of the state park, fair warning, it is 27 miles of washboard gravel road.
We did many of the day hikes off 170 that are in the state park. One day, we went into the national park and crossed to Boquillas, Mexico. The closest town to La Cuesta is Lajitas.
Officially, this is the only campground in the state park that allows rv's, although... we have tent camped in Grassy Banks and our 25' trailer would certainly have fit. There are 4 sites at La Cuesta. The site (4) that is closest to the pit toilet is very unlevel. We stayed in #3 because that is what was open when we pulled in. We had to park closest to the front of the site due to the bad slope. #1, closest to the road is the most level. There are fire rings and picnic tables at each site. We didn't build a fire because it was windy every night.

Beautiful canyon setting but as others mentioned it’s just a gravel parking lot. Felt very isolated especially with no cell coverage. A long way from the state park visitors center which we did not realize when we made our reservation. Very long drive back to Big Bend National Park to the Rio Grande Area. We stayed our final night at a commercial RV park in Teralingua and that was much more convenient to BBNP.

Correction to previous post: The long steep hill on Hwy 170 is east of this campground not west as stated in my previous review.

Be aware that there are some very steep grades on the highway (up to 18%). Most of the hills are only moderately long but there is one long steep hill west of this campground. Our rig is a 1-ton pickup towing a 12,000 lb fifth wheel. I would not want to travel this road with a the same truck and heavier trailer.

In addition, we share several Big Horn Sheep sightings made during our stay at Big Bend Ranch State Park. Our campsite made a great base camp to explore Big Bend Ranch State Park and the campsite was definitely affordable.

We were set to stay here but couldn’t get a level enough spot so we went elsewhere. Didn’t like the vibe at all. Hot. Exposed. Far from River. Generally unpleasant.
