Grassy Banks Campground

The Big Bend Ranch State Park administration appears to be discouraging RV camping. Several sites are large enough to accommodate vehicles of at least 35 feet, but the park actively enforces an 18 foot limit on vehicle length (obstensibly to protect vegetation but a tent would damage more vegetation than an RV's wheels). The only sites in the park that are available for vehicles over 18 feet (but only under 30 feet is permitted) are 4 sites at La Cuesta Campground that are side by side on an unlevel gravel parking lot adjacent to the highway. Grassy Banks Campground has some nice, fairly private, level sites. The highway is quite close but traffic is sparse in the evening and night. The sky is very dark so the stars are spectacular. There is no cell service whatsoever.

Disclaimer: we drove through in truck. Didn’t stay here though. The road of 170 through the park to the campground is quite curvy and windy, but we did see a fifth wheel and a class A on the main road. The turn off to the campground area is a gravel road, but level with no ruts. The majority of the campsites would fit tents, truck campers, and vans. Maybe a few smaller class C as well. However campsite number 16 would fit a large rig. we would return with a 33 foot travel trailer and attempt that site. There were also several unnumbered areas that had been leveled out recently. It appears that they are looking to add more RV it appears that they are looking to add more RV sites. There was a shelter with a picnic table underneath at this site. We were there during 70° weather in the winter and no one else was camping in this campground.
