“The Park discourages RV camping”

The Big Bend Ranch State Park administration appears to be discouraging RV camping. Several sites are large enough to accommodate vehicles of at least 35 feet, but the park actively enforces an 18 foot limit on vehicle length (obstensibly to protect vegetation but a tent would damage more vegetation than an RV's wheels). The only sites in the park that are available for vehicles over 18 feet (but only under 30 feet is permitted) are 4 sites at La Cuesta Campground that are side by side on an unlevel gravel parking lot adjacent to the highway. Grassy Banks Campground has some nice, fairly private, level sites. The highway is quite close but traffic is sparse in the evening and night. The sky is very dark so the stars are spectacular. There is no cell service whatsoever.

The state park is just beautiful with tons of hiking and mt biking near by. Even though you are completely off grid with not cell phone service you are about a 20 min drive to lajitas golf resort where you can grab some yummy food and a drink after a day exploring the park! And, the best part, the stars are AMAZING at night!

Grassy Flats Campground
Outstanding campground for dry camping. Sites are very roomy and include fire pit and shade shelter. Two composting toilets are provided on site and function wonderfully. The views and location are wonderful, it is an international dark sky site, and we were there on a weekend in late January and had it almost to ourselves.
It is dry camping and as it is remote, there is no cell service. There is cell service in Lajitas which is about 11 miles east. We looked at the campgrounds in Big Bend National Park (Chisos and Cottenwood) and much prefer this campground. Of note is that you make reservations by selecting Barton Warnock Visitor Center on the Texas State Park’s reservation site and not the park itself.
marackish would stay here again
