It's all about the river:
This BLM campground is the place to go if you want to fish or do some casual boating / kayaking, canoeing. Remote NE corner of Utah below the Flaming Gorge Dam.
Normal rate is $10 ($5 with the InterAgency Senior pass)
- Five of us tent camped two nights at Indian Crossing campground in September 2020 to kayak for a day
- Mostly flat water & Class 1 rapids
- 12 miles to the Swallow Canyon takeout (about a 3.5 hour float plus a 30 min lunch stop)
- Need at least two vehicles for car shuttle and enough room in one vehicle for all in the party (about 20 min drive from the campground)
- About 1/2 the sites were occupied almost exclusively with people fishing (except us)
- Primitive camping / most sites have covered picnic tables and a large fire ring / sites were clean / potable water available
- It looks like there might be a site for a camp host in the summer months
- Road and campsites are dirt
- 2 pit toilets
- If you are tent camping, soil is hard as rock so you'll need big nails or rocks to hold your tent down
- Quiet / amazing night sky!
- Can be windy
- Bear country (they mean it! / keep the campsite free of any food that means coolers as well)
- Next to John Jarvie Historic Ranch site (worth a visit / no charge) - we couldn't go into the buildings because of COVID-19 but the ranger opened the doors so we could look inside. Super nice and helpful.
Wildlife: We saw a flamulated owl and heard great horned owls at night. We also saw a bald eagle and two moose on the river bank. According to the BLM ranger, river otter can be observed later in the day / evening from the water

I gave this a 5 star overall rating for the amazing experience
