What a great state park with campgrounds. Fort Robinson was an Army base from 1847 to 1947. It was primarily a calvary location but during WWII was a training site for Glider Aircraft for the Army Aircorp. It had a well known medical facility and one of its most famous Doctors was Walter Reed. In the 1880’s it was also the home for the famed Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th Calvary.
There are three RV campgrounds. One is for those that have horses and they can board their horses in the former Army Stables.
Red Cloud campground is full service with 50/30/20, water and sewer at each campsite.
Soldier Creek has 30/20 electric only sites.
There is also a tent only area.
Only 50% of the camp sites take reservations and when I was there the week before July 4th on a Saturday there was probably 25% of the sites available.
Sites are a mixture of open with little shade to fully covered by mature trees.
Rates are $20 for the electric only and $26 for the full service sites.
There is lots to do at the fort. They have 2 museums, though the entire Fort is a museum. There are horse rides, carriage rides, a playhouse during the summer with entertainment, a good restaurant from breakfast thru dinner. Rooms and cabins available in the former barracks and officers quarters. Lots of hiking.
Take the scenic road, just west of the park on the north side of US 20. It winds through the hills and I saw bison and long horn sheep on the drive.
Gary would stay here again
