There is plenty of activity around the fishing dock, pier and park. But not enough to make it unpleasant.

There are no real spots, so just be courteous and try not to damage the grass.

We arrived in a Satuday and of course the office for the permits are close, we talked to one of the sheriff that patrols the park (You don't mess in Texas) and he gave us the ok. What a beautiful park. They have a fishing area and be aware of alligators. Mosquitos are killers so go inside before they come out. Restrooms were ok.

We opted to park on the lower portion near the fishing pier. The view was peaceful and pretty, it was rather quiet other than a few fishermen coming and going, it was a weekend, but even then it was never overly crowded, families picnicked and there were kids, as is normal for a park. Even then it was much more peaceful than most campgrounds.
I'm only giving 3 stars for Access because the signs say not to park on the grass, only on the gravel, but the grass has grown everywhere except the roads, so "knowing" where to set up is quite confusing.
I didn't use the bathroom facilities so can't comment on that. The park itself was clean and we really enjoyed reading about the history of the location.

Stayed one night in March 2022. I called the Anahuac parks dept and the woman said you can park for up to 3 nights free. She emailed me a pass and said we could camp anywhere in the park. We drove past the pier and pulled over on the gravel beside the water before the boat launch. It was a Thursday night, and a few cars came in and out. Two cars with teenage boys parked about 100 yards away and stayed for a couple of hours, leaving a dozen or so beer cans on the ground, but didn’t cause any problems. There were 2 travel trailers in the park also. I’d stayed there again, but it would probably be busy on a weekend with more fishermen and partying teens.

If you drive past the playground and take the road near what looks like someone's house, you can park down by the water. Two RVs were down there, and a tent camper was set up closer to us.
There are two nice playground sets in the middle of the park. They appeared to be doing some construction to the baseball fields, but nothing while we were there.
We looked around for signage about camping or permits as others have mentioned that's required and saw nothing. No one bothered us. We stayed on a Saturday night.

It’s 530 on a Monday second to the last week of August. The park is wide open, green grass and a nice view of the water. It’s a lot cleaner than I would expect. It’s a perfect place to stop after a day on the road.

They are there, you just have to look for them. This is a busy park but no one bothered us. We found a great laundromat (The Washateria) on Miller St. The outside looked pretty rough, but the machines, tables, and floors were very clean and the prices were great!
We really enjoyed all the birds and alligators at the Anahuac wildlife refuge.

You need a free permit to camp. They will photocopy your driver's license and give you a hang-tag. The permit office is not the easiest to find. You actually turn into a fenced-in area that has a sign saying "Authorized Personnel Only", and the Parks/Rec office is on the right. If you're looking for a camping permit, you are authorized.
