I work from home/ rv so I had to have good service and stayed closer to the entrance. I would stay here again, a forest fire started not to far away and with the winds we headed out early. I hope they got it under control and all is well.

This place was easy to get to but yet felt like it was way “out there” when you were there. Plenty of space amongst ponderosa pines. Some areas had more open fields too. It was quiet and beautiful although every once in a while you’d hear the train in the distance. (Faint sound)

Stayed here as a base camp area to explore Flagstaff, Sedona, and the South rim of the Grand Canyon. Lots of great space to spread out through the forest, its a forest road so expect mud if it's been wet, and some spots of the road aren't ideal the further you get in but otherwise anyone should be fine. Excellent cell service, particularly strong T-Mobile/Sprint - I was getting 25-30mbps steadily even 2 miles into the forest, worked from my hotspot with no issues at all. There's a Pilot gas station right at the exit of I40 to get to this area with a water spigot to the right of the building in the front next to the air station near the McDonalds drive through exit, theres also a water spigot/hose to the left rear of the building past the diesel semi pumps. There are also a couple of dump stations in Flagstaff at Speedways for free, I also saw one at the Maverick station just west of flagstaff, but I'm not sure if it was free or not. As noted by other reviewers, theres Lava River Cave 5 or so miles north to explore - formed by a former lava river. Check the weather - sunny days can turn to wet snowy evenings real quick (which mean mud)!

I had good service, plenty of space, and many options to camp. It was quiet, clean, and beautiful. I stayed in April so temps dropped to low thirties at night. Road was well maintained...drive up the road a ways, there is a cave to walk through 🤍

We were driving up to Grand Canyon and needed a place to sleep for the night with a 16’ trailer and van. The rest area nearby was closed. We pulled in at 10:30pm and there were a few turnouts right away but the road was closed. We pulled over before the gate and slept for a few hours. Felt safe and super easy access to the freeway.

This was our second spot on FR171 and the move was for the good. Out of the 5 National Forests we have stayed in this is the cleanest. FR171 has a good deal of trafficking but it is not overwhelming. We were at 35.1816, -111.4958.

We stayed here a week ago in a 24' MH and it was great. The road itself is in good shape, there are quite a number of sites and very spread out. You're in the forest so there is lots of shade but also plenty of sun if you want it. We stayed one night off 171 then 2 nights on 222, which I also recommend with good road and good sites. We also took 193 back to 180 and that was nice too. So overall a great area with lots of campsite options.
The only negative was there were bees. Not a ton but enough that it kept us inside during the day more than we wanted. Luckily at night they went away so we could eat outside etc. We asked a couple of forestry guys in the area if this was normal and they said they work out there all the time and don't have an issue. But later, we met some friends in Flag and their house backs up to the forest and they said bees and wasps are a bit of an issue.
We've been camping and hiking in AZ for 40 years and haven't had a bee problem ever, but maybe this year is different due to the extraordinary heat we've had and the dryness.
Overall we will definitely be back but with some bee repellent this time or a screen tent.
