We arrived Thursday afternoon and there were already a few spots taken. We found one that was obviously used by a big group. There was a huge fire ring is stones. We arrived around 8 AM after leaving Flagstaff early. The road getting in is a bit bumpy with some ruts but go slow and it’s completely doable. I’m a 29 foot rig and never had an issue. There were several spots that we passed two of them had the ability to turn around in, but we were very pleased with the one that we chose it had a fire ring and not a speck of trash in or around it.
Verizon had one bar occasionally two but always had some service. Definitely will be returning in the summer, at 8,000+ft it got cold at night at the beginning of May.

Few ruts but good road. At the end of the public road is a beautiful man view. Verizon coverage consistent, large spread out spaces. Almost no one on entire road today

No free camping in town so we decided to go further in the direction of the Grand Canyon. We took the 180 and found a place to sleep for the night at Forest Road 794. However the gate for acces to the campground was locked. We decided to stay at the entrance. During the afternoon there was road noise. During the night it was quiet. In the afternoon we walked for a mile up the FR794. If you are brave and a good big rig driver it is duable to camp further on. We were glad we stayed at the entrance.

About 5 spots during the first mile up, some of them pull through. We were pulling a 19 foot airstream with an X5 and had no issues climbing the snowy forest road. However you might want to consider snow chains for added peace of mind (we got them for the way down). Good clearance, probably gets muddy when snow melts. So scout ahead. A... more

However you might want to consider snow chains for added peace of mind (we got them for the way down). Good clearance, probably gets muddy when snow melts. So scout ahead. A guy in front of us with a 3 axle rig decided to turn back as he was clearly struggling. We’d definitely come again!

All went well we liked the site, very peaceful and quiet except for empty steel trailers passing our camp regularly during the day which made a lot of noise. ( site was close to the road) We chose this area to get out of the 90 Degree plus weather in Chino Valley where we live, at 8000 feet the high in August was about 84°
