“Great spot, close to St George - not so good for pets.”

Reviewed Oct 17, 2017

Overall Rating

We stayed at this spot last night along with probably 10 other units however, the area is so big that none of us were anywhere close to each other. If arriving in the dark, you will probably want to camp closer to the main road than we did but the thing to note here is the dust. Staying as far from the main road will keep this down. Great free spot, close to St George but my biggest negative was the millions upon millions of desert thorn bushes. We have two dogs and this place was a nightmare for them. Lots of thorn pulling from paws and the place is littered with them.

This spot will work just fine if you have no pets. There is decent LTE signal with AT&T with a Unite Explore Hotspot and it's stunning scenery and dark nights, made for a wonderful nights sleep.

We are in a 56ft rig (truck and trailer) and had no problems maneuvering.

There was some litter dumped near our spot and some shot up electronics but other than that it was clean.

“Free Camping Close to St. George Utah”

Reviewed Apr 23, 2017

Overall Rating

We wanted to stay as close to the south side of St. George Utah as possible to be near family. This site was unbelievably convenient. It was minutes into St. George but yet totally free. You take BLM Road 1069 from the River Rd exit off of Southern Parkway. There are few spots along 1069 by the hills but these are often full of people with ATV trailers or horse trailers during the day. We went until BLM 1069 met up with BLM 1009 and took a little side spur on the top of the ridge. There are 4 apparent camp spots here and almost no one drives this little side road so it's a bit quieter. We had 3 bars of Verizon LTE with our booster.

A couple of notes. This is actually AZ State Trust Land and there are signs warning about trespassing and the need for a permit. We couldn't find any definite information about a camping permit so we didn't get one. We were here 2 weeks and saw the sheriff or a park ranger multiple times and were never questioned.

This is a hot spot for ATVing as well as target shooting. You will have ATVs and pickup trucks roaring along BLM 1069 so be aware. Also, weekends get very crowded. There are target shooting locations behind most of the hills and we had people shooting not too far from our Airstream multiple times. We didn't feel in danger but it is something we had to get used to. In addition all the shooting means there is A LOT of trash in those areas and some of it blows around. It's really sad how much is dumped here but our site wasn't too bad after a quick cleanup.

Overall for the convenience, safety, and views, we couldn't beat this location and we'll be back. Our GPS Location was 36.992977, -113.572144 and there are 3 more spots farther down the small road we were on.
