I almost rolled my 99 Ford Explorer and had to extended back out due to lack of turn around space. Huge ditches and rutting in the roads in. I would say you need a rock crawler to actually get in and out of here safely. Or be ready to drive over vegetation.

This place is a little rough to get into may not be the best for larger rigs. We had a great experience super quiet and unbeatable sunsets. We are in a lance 830 with a ram 4x4.

We were here at the end of March 2018 and we could not get to the camping spots with our 35 feet long bus, because the road was too rough (it starts totally fine and gets very off camber at some point). Just make sure you scout it out first as the road changes with the rain.

“Great dry camping close to highway 12 but not close enough to hear traffic. Near to Escalante town and Escalante River trailhead.”

Coming from the east (from Boulder) around mile marker 67, look for an unmarked road on the north side of Highway 12. On google maps, look for BLM 107 Big Flat road. We drove past the first camping spot and opted for the second. This second camping spot was larger flatter and just a little bit higher elevation giving us 1 bar more of cell coverage.
This spot was large enough for our 21 foot travel trailer, but could take a larger rig without too much trouble.
We saw only a few cars pass by in the 3 days we stayed here, presumably hikers doing the lower section of Escalante canyon ? We're not exactly sure. We saw no other camper rigs during this time.
This spot has some good piñon pines surrounding it to get some semblance of a wind break. We had heavy winds 2 of the nights, but had at least a little protection that made sleeping possible.
A short walk to a rise in the hill offers a nice sunset view as well as a view of the Straight Cliffs, but its really not the view that you are hear for. The key is a short drive from the highway, not too rough of a road, not much clearance needed on your rig.
When we were staying here, there was a forecast of rain (although that never happened) so we were looking for a dry camping spot that had a fairly short drive in, just in case.
This spot is about 15 minutes from "downtown" Escalante, and about 10 minutes to Kiva Koffee (we never went there, but its easy to spot on highway 12)
NOTE : the cell coverage listings below are without a cell booster (WeBoost 4g-X OTR). With a cell booster, we were able to get decent enough speeds on both Verizon 4G LTE and T-Mobile 4G to work remotely. My average on Verizon was about 7 MB down.
El Schaefo would stay here again
