This campground has an interesting name. The name originates from the proximity to South Twin Lake. West South Twin Lake campground is west of South Twin Lake. The South Twin Lake campground is on the shore of South Twin Lake. West South Twin Lake campground is on the shore of Wickiup Reservoir. Remember that this is a reservoir and water levels will be higher in the spring and lower in the late summer and fall. The campground is directly across Forest Service road 4260 from the South Twin Lake Resort, so there is easy access to their restaurant and small grocery store.
We stayed at site 19 which is a pull-through with a nice view of Wickiup Reservoir. Sites 18 and 22 are back-in sites and also have a nice view of the water, but site 22 is closer to the boat launch and the area where boaters park their trucks. Sites 22 and 19 are mostly shaded and site 18 is mostly sunny. Sites 9 - 13 are tent or truck camper sites, there is no turnaround area for trailers. Our favorite sites were 15, 16, 18, 19 and 22 with 19 being the best.
We really enjoy the large campsites when camping at the National Forest Service campgrounds. There is always plenty of room between campsites and this campground is no exception. You can sit outside and have a conversation without the neighbors hearing every word you say.
There are several trails in the area. You can walk a long distance along Wickiup Reservoir. There is a one mile trail around South Twin Lake and a trail from the South Twin Lake campground to North Twin Lake, which also has a campground.
Cell service is spotty in this area. At site 19 we did not have an AirVoice (AT&T) signal. We did have a weak but usable signal when using our Straight Talk (Verizon) hotspot with external antenna and amplifier.
Mike and Holly would stay here again
