Really love this campground that we discovered while traveling through. There was a gorgeous sunset and the facilities and layout are all great. We paid $12 for a developed but no hookups site with a view of the valley and mountains. Showers are clean.

We were not planning on staying here... just passing through, but found the landscape and park set-up so great that we stayed a night! Park ranger Daniel was incredibly friendly and helpful. We had payed for day use- $5 - and he had us just pay another $13 in a separate envelope for our pull through electric/water site. I do agree that the newly laid black top surface may be a problem as it gets hotter- it was already quite soft and it was around 85 degrees when we were there. The views of all the lava rock and the paved 2/3 mile trail were spectacular and unique. The bats do come out to play at dusk, but we’re not bothersome. It was fun to watch them dive around as they hunted bugs. We did the trail twice. Our second time was at dusk while the sun was setting and the hue that the sunset left against the red rocks, plants, and lava rocks were beautiful. Very cool overnight stay, if not longer. And definitely a must stop-by if you are in the area. Showers were still closed due to COVID restrictions.

We just spent two nights here (in early May, 2021) and there are many great things, but we also had two big problems.
Problem one (probably only an issue in 2021). The sites, and in fact most the campground, have been re-blacktopped. It LOOKS great. So shiny and new. But the stuff is still quite tacky, and we ended up tracking tar into our RV and getting it everywhere. I accidentally knelt on the ground to look at something under my rig, and now I have a ruined pair of pants. When we put our leveling blocks down and leveled our rig, when we left, we found we had left giant lego-shaped impressions in the tar. And when it gets even hotter there in June/July...yikes, it's going to be a problem. Hopefully by next year, it will be better. But this is really something to watch for.
Problem 2: They did a great job re-surfacing everything (see above) but most of the sites, despite looking lovely, are very un-level. We had one heck of a time levelling our 30 ft class A. The sites slope front to back AND to the side. A recipe for a real leveling challenge. We walked around the campground and saw lots of very precariously propped-up rigs (our own included). It's a shame they didn't fix some of this before they resurfaced everything.
The campground, otherwise, is great. The spots are generously sized and spread pretty far apart. Each site has water, a metal picnic table with a substantial shade covering, a fire pit and a grill. Most have 50 amp electric, which worked very cleanly. Water pressure was acceptable.
Most of the sites also have great views of the lava field. The field itself has a 2/3rd mile loop trail with lots of interesting information. We actually walked it 3 different times, first in the evening (and we really enjoyed when the bats came shortly before sunset) and discovered new things each time. There are other, longer trails around, but when we were there the visitor center/gift shop were still closed for COVID and we had no one we could get good information from. We stumbled across a couple of trailheads, but were reluctant to go too far, not knowing what we were in for.
The grounds also include some outstanding tent camping sites, if that's of interest. The dump station is easy to get to. There are also several new looking restrooms, but when we were there, all were closed (again, due to COVID). That was fine with us, but if you're needing restroom facilities available, maybe call ahead.
It's a lovely place and we look forward to returning. (Oh, and cell phone coverage was excellent. We used our Verizon Hot Spot for watching Netflix with no issues.)

An unexpected gem. The sites had just been re-paved, and site 1 was level. We checked a few other sites that were very unlevel and in a Class C we couldn't level. We had a no service site, which was not an issue for us. The view over the Valley was incredible. It was very windy though.
Daniel, the camp host, talked to us when we were leaving, and he was very pleasant.
Price reflects America the Beautiful discount.

This BLM campsite was immaculate.
We stayed for two nights (Fri-Sat) in my 2011 Dodge Durango in a tent site. There was two other families that pulled in later in the day one of which was also car camping. There was plenty of space there and availability but the RV sites filled up VERY quickly. There were single toilet bathrooms posted all over the camp site. We had one about a 3 minute walk from where we were parked. It certainly came in handy.
The tent sites sit lower than the rv sites so not many people drove or walked around there which was nice as I have two dogs one of which is leash reactive. The space was flat and open so the dogs didnt get tangled too bad on their leads.
The visitors center was cute and there were small trails one of which had a paved walkway. The campsite hosts drove around on their side-by-side around dusk and waved at us. They seemed friendly.
Overall, I'd really reccomend this place. Bring your own firewood or an axe and ALOT of patience. There isnt too much thick wood here that can be cut down. We ended up bringing some logs we already had and boy im glad we did.

Enjoyed our stay, nice paved, mostly level hiking loop thru lava field. Unique landscape. Our site, and several others, were a bit unlevel but manageable. Host friendly, everything neat, clean and orderly. Tent camping sites very nice. T-mobile has been strong.
Park will be closed for road work 4/12 to 4/23/ 2021.

On a personal note, I found myself thinking about my departed mother while walking the trail. In her final days she had mobility issues. I was just thinking, this is a place I could bring her, if she was still with us. I know she would enjoy it.
The campsites and restrooms are very clean, very well maintained. There are a couple of handclapped accessible sites. The shower building and at least one of the restrooms is also handicapped accessible. This place, though a small camp ground, is easily big rig accessible, and designed to you can turn around at either end. So no issue driving from one end to the other with your rig to scout a good spot. It's very peaceful and quiet here, and easy to get a good sleep. Great cell service with Verizon and ATT (not sure if that's a plus or minus ahah:-) )
I'd stay here again....
