We arrived at the campground and there were no hosts. Luckily there was a DNR police officer who told us we could drive up the hill, circle around and pull into our campground easier.
We stayed in site 10 and it was narrow. We couldn’t back all the way in because of railroad ties restricted the width of the site. It was easy to back in but there wasn’t anyone in the sites in the other side of the road from us so that helped.
My wife and I have Verizon and there was no service. We have a Wi-Fi jet pack that also had no service. We could get service driving out the loop road to the highway.
There is no camp store and little information in what to do at the park.
It was nice and secluded. You couldn’t tell you were near two larger cities. This was a fun campground to walk around.

This is a large state park in the northwest corner of Iowa, surprisingly wooded considering how close to Sioux City it is located. Touted as a year-round park, there is a large network of trails, some of which can be used as equestrian. HOWEVER, the trails are not labeled and there is no (or very fleeting) cell service so that even after looking at the map (located on a board in the park, not a paper one), I wandered aimlessly around the park getting lost. One of the trailheads requires that you tramp directly through Site 12 to access! I explored this trail for approximately a quarter of a mile, but it became very overgrown and because I was not sure where I was going, I ended up turning around. The campground is divided into three sections:
• Sites 1-11 are located on either side of the access road are a bit too close together for our preference and despite the park being so wooded, have no foliage or other visible separation between the sites. These sites all have electric hookups
• Sites 12-14 are at the top of the hill and have the easiest access to the restrooms; they also have electric hookups. In my opinion, Site 14 would be the most desirable. Given that there are only three sites here, there was a surprising number of cars driving past these sites.
• Sites 15-30 are primitive tent sites and located near Cabin #3 (a CCC cabin).
The bathrooms were clean and (don’t laugh at me), the toilets had lids! Given the current virus situation, this was a nice and welcome surprise! There was no camp host and we only saw one ranger during our stay. There is a nice playground, but it is not located anywhere near the campground (it is located closer to two of the cabins). If you are camping with children, please note this.
There are thre appear to be open when we were there. e cabins, one that was built by the CCC and a lodge which also looked to be a CCC product, although it did not

We stayed here back in June. Having a bad experience somewhere else this last weekend made me appreciate this park that much more. This is a large park with an abundance of trails for hiking and biking. There is not very good cell coverage though if you need that. This was a plus for us because it forced the kids to get up and do something. The campground is small however. All though there are some first come sites, I would certainly make a reservation first. Some sites are small, and the parking pads for the longer ones are narrow. The sites themselves are spacious. There are really only 2 or 3 spots available if you are 30' or longer, so keep that in mind. But the campground itself, is quiet, clean, and well maintained. All sites have a thick tree canopy over all them, which makes it so much easier for the AC to keep up on a hot day. You'd never know you were inside city limits. All in all, we really enjoyed it and look forward to staying here again.

This very petite campground is located within a fairly large state park that sits inside the city limits of Sioux City. The campground only has 8 sites with electricity (the rest are either basic sites with car access, or hike in) and not all of them are reservable. For larger rigs, the choices are pretty limited. The best site for a larger rig (we are a 25 foot Airstream) is without a doubt #12. Site 12 is gravel, very level, large enough for virtually any rig, and has a decent angle of approach thanks to being on the end of the turnaround loop. Sites 13 and 14 are very small, and the sites with lower numbers are narrow and perpendicular to the road, making parking difficult. The only downside of site 12 is a trailhead immediately behind the site, but foot traffic was extremely light during our stay. Sites have picnic tables and fire rings, but they are generally not on gravel and were quite muddy during our stay.
During the summer season there is a bathhouse with flush toilets and showers; in the off season there is a vault toilet available for campers. The park offers recycling (plastic and aluminum), trash, and potable water. The campground has no dump station, but dumping is available for free at the rest station on I-29 South, or for $10 at the nearby KOA. The park has numerous picnic shelters and a network of trails that can be assembled into a decent hike. Several trails leave directly from the campground. The roads within the campground are pretty narrow and windy, but you only need to travel on them for a short distance.

The park is very close to Sioux City commercial areas, and gas and groceries are available within a short drive. Despite this, the park is extremely quiet and feels quite remote.
We had OK but not great service on AT&T (1 bar LTE). Download: 9.71 Mbps Upload: 1.04 Mbps.
