Sand prairie is one of several NFS campgrounds along the Hills Creek Reservoir and Middle Fork of the Willamette River about 16 miles south of Oakridge. It's operated by a the American Liesure concessionaire, and no effort seems to have been made by either the ACA or the NFS to maintain this small campground or make it the least bit welcoming. Most sites are very shallow and suitable only for an SUV.

The information board at the entrance is composed of three full sheets of plywood and populated by over two dozen individual signs each highlighting its own forbidden activity. You'd think they could be consolidated into one long list of things you can't do. Sadly this approach to communicating with the public is typical state and federal campgrounds, especially ones operated by third parties.

Even though it's right by the river, there's no way to actually see the river because it's so overgrown. The mosquito population is thriving however.

There are many decent dispersed sites before and after this campground, so save your money and try one of those.

The trailhead for the Middle Fork mountain bike trai is located at the end of the loop inside the campground. It too is overgrown and not much fun. Spray yourself well with bug repellant before attempting this ride!

We visited on June 20, 2017.
