I stayed here June 8-9 on my way to Big Bend National Park and it was quite hot during the day but cooled off nicely in the evening. The wind was at times very blustery which made it difficult to be outside. The campsites are fairly close together, but there were only a few travel trailers there including me. One person did set up a tent late in the evening next to me and I felt bad for them because it was so windy. It is quite pretty there and the sand is soft like dunes at a beach. The power and water worked great. The city of Monahans is just a short drive down the interstate which was convenient because I needed an oil change and a few things from Ace Hardware. I would totally stay here again if I was passing through the area.

Troubling winds and oppressive heat threatened the next leg on our journey further west. Being there are no decent campgrounds between Junction, TX and Davis Mountains State Park except for Balmorhea State Park (which I think claims to have the largest spring fed pool in the world, and there were no openings there anyway) we were stuck with our prior reservation at this giant sandbox with full sun and 98 degree temps. Site 19 however is as private as you can get and backs up to a dune which was nice. A metal shade pavilion was provided as well. But the cell service was pitifully slow. ATT had one bar as did our back-up wifi T-Mobile. But we made them work well enough to get a few things accomplished. Power and water were good, clean restroom and showers, and the dump station was in operation on the way out. With a small adjustment our site was level so we had no need to disconnect. Just a quick overnight for us and on to Davis Mountains State Park.
The nearby town of Monahans is where country music legend singer/songwriter Guy Clark grew up. But there really isn't much there and it felt a bit dangerous. Clark was fortunate to get out of there. Can't imagine a train track being the best entertainment for a high school kid.
It is beautiful here and it is understandable why so many enjoy coming here in any weather. But October would be a better time to come than mid June. As the sun was slowly sinking the temps became more tolerable and the wind was rather nice. We took a bit of a hike and made use of what little time we had here before moving on.

Arrived 16:15, 12 March 2024. $15 fee, with our Texas Parks Pass. Great park just off I-20. Easy in/out. We’ve stayed here many times, and this stay was one-nite while transiting west. Lovely, unique environment. Far enough off I-20 and dunes high enough to mitigate most I-20 noise. Surrounding facility lighting significantly impacts the dark, nite sky. Park was full when we arrived, being Spring break week. All picnic area lots were full, and campground was fully booked. Plenty of tenters this time. Restrooms were clean, but they looked like it had been a busy day. Campsites were clean, and trash cans had been emptied later in the day. Camp host was active keeping sites clean, and turning away drive ins. Site 003 is a pull thru, but it is more than 3 Leveler blocks off level, front-to-back. Will not stay in this site again, but will return.

The sand dunes are fun but beware of all the stickers especially if you have a dog. We had to pick several out of our dogs paws.
Met some fun people and the staff was great!

It is a small campground, w/e each site and a dump station. Place is kept nice. Some of the sites are laid out kinda weird with the shade/table....DO NOT reserve site 2! It is the worst spot in the park. It's very small and doesn't line up with the shade/table. It encroaches on site 1.
Very quiet and peaceful!

A great campsite with level spaces and a nice loop for navigating the larger site. Quiet, clean, well-maintained. We really enjoyed watching the sunset at this stop on the way to Big Bend. The a/c works great in the super arid environment. It was very comfortable even in 100 degree temps. Highly recommend!

This is an easy stop on your way across Texas. We had a fairly level, pull through, with full hookups for only $25, quite the deal. The sand hills are interesting and makes it worth your stay.

NOTE: every other site has a covered picnic table on a cement floor. The wasn't much room to park our truck. We had satellite with Dish but only 1 bar with Verizon but did a little better with our WeBoost. I didn't find the staff in the visitor center to be terribly friendly. Pro: you can walk anywhere you want around the dunes which was great. I wouldn't return to this area. There is absolutely nothing in the town of Monahans.
