Overall Rating
Totally free. No hookups. About 20 miles of dirt road to get to the area, but made it no problem with our 42’ 5th wheel. We were the only ones here in mid May 2019. 1/2 mile walk up to the agate beds or you can drive in a 4x4. Need to pass through a small creek which was about 18” deep when we were there. Nice picnic area and single vault toilet. Picnic tables and fire rings. Park person came out at one point but didn’t say anything to us. Private, remote, easy access and free!

French Creek is in the Buffalo Gap Natl Grassland (NF). 7 sites, grills, tables. Vault toilet. If you have 4 wheel or high clearance vehicle you drive north out of the campground and into the Agate Fields to the north of the campground. Downside was no Verizon coverage even with a booster within the campground. Did have coverage about a mile to the west.
Road into the campground from the west (Fairborn, SD) is dirt, relatively smooth with some minor washboarding.

The official website for French Creek states this is a fee area. Called the number listed on the page and spoke to a Ranger who said that it is indeed free, there is no fee, and that the website is incorrect. He also said there's a donation box available if you wish to contribute.
