“Busy Campground in Busy Park”

Reviewed Sep 12, 2017

Overall Rating

We stayed here during our daughter's high school mountain biking team's race weekend. The race was right in the park, so this was super convenient. It was also super packed and super busy, which was expected since 50 teams from all over Arizona were participating. There are a lot of events held at this park, so I imagine it's busy often.

The campground's online reservation system is one of the worst I've ever come across. The map is a cartoonish joke, and trying to search for available sites on certain dates is maddening because there is no option that allows you to see what sites are open for the dates you want. You have to search each site individually. Then after you go through all their hoops to figure out whether or not you want to stay there, they add a ridiculous $12 booking fee to your reservation. $21 a night for dry RV camping and tent camping is steep. But $6 a night more just to book online (and phone reservations are not accepted so don't think you're going to save any money) is outright mean.

But, like I said, we were right there in the middle of the action so we did what we had to do.

The campground is pretty because it's set right inside a gorgeous forest of pines. The roads are dirt, but they're wide and big rigs can get through easily. Some spots have full hook-ups, but ours did not. Ours was also listed as a back-in site, but it's a pull through. The campground map and online site specifications are not accurate. Site driveways are dirt, and each site as a picnic table and stone fire pit. No grills or grates.

Fort Tuthill County Park has lots to do. In addition to miles of biking and hiking trails, they have a mountain biking skills course and pump track. There's an awesome ropes course on site called Flagstaff Extreme Adventures. Our son did the junior course the day the team pre-rode the course, so it was nice that he was able to keep busy and have a lot of fun doing that! He loved the bike park, too. Fairgrounds are there, and I heard there was an airsoft arena, too.

The campground does have an oddly placed dump station right in the middle of the place, and water filling stations are all through the campground. Be aware: all the restrooms are port-a-potties. They were clean, but they were port-a-potties. I'd actually prefer a vault toilet? I guess so. It was just strange.

We had a team dinner at our site, but families had to park outside the campground to avoid the $7 parking fee inside the campground.

Cell service was sketchy at best, which is weird because we were no more than a mile away from I-17 and the town of Flagstaff is five minutes away.

The host was very helpful and accommodating when we needed a late check-out on race day. The couple is very friendly and kind, and I'd say they are the best part of this campground.

“Fair but fine. Very clean.”

We've stayed here twice. The first time by mistake as we thought we had reservations at the military campground next door-which is only open to vets and military retirees. Fort Tuthill is fine, mostly dusty dirt under pine trees. Shade is good but verizon signal was poor and unreliable. You can hear the planes from the airport and the noise from the people having fun at the zip line place next door. You can actually watch them. Section E was in the front but also the most accessible and level. If you have a tent then you have more choices including the back areas which were not level for a trailer. We were here in the rain the first time and boy does it flood!!! Bad drainage! With limited choices in the area, this place may be a good choice for some as it is basically dry camping with bathrooms and no showers...which is why we watched some campers bring their soap and towel to the water spout across from our spot 😝
