Choctaw Lake Recreation Area

Just 12 miles off the Natchez Trace, we found this park. It's exceptionally well kept and the staff is friendly. There is no ambient light or noise, perfect for rest after a day of traveling. The sites are level with water and electric, some with sewer. There is swimming, playgrounds, trails, fishing and more one of the most beautiful parks in the southeast. We're moving on, but it's a place where you can stay a while.

Loop A is all first come first serve, no reservations. Loop B has sites that can be reserved or first come first serve if available when you arrive.

We came in on a Wednesday and there where many empty first come first serve sites available (even the reservable sites had many open). We stayed for 4 days in Site 8, back corner of Loop A. Most sites backed up at an angle to the water, but Site 8 is parallel to the water, the whole front (passenger side) faces the water.

Power and water hookups, a dump station is provided on site. Numerous hiking trails well worth the hiking. Lake offers fishing, and you can put small boats on it, speed is restricted to "no wake speed" for the entire lake.

Great trip for our first outing as "greenhorn" campers. Went Memorial Day weekend and thankfully had booked about 5 weeks ahead. Campground was completely full, but remained quiet. Bathrooms were older, but clean and the the camp hosts were some locals that were eager to welcome us and visit.

AT&T coverage on my phone ranged from 1 to 2 bars. With my Winegard 360 and gateway the signal stayed at a solid 3 bars.

All sites allow RVs or tents for $20, Eligible passes reduce the price to $13. Many first come, first served or “walk-in” sites are available.

Sites are all large, level,on gravel pads and with ample space between them and include water and electric, table, fire pit, grill, and lantern post.

Bathrooms are available but the showers are closed now. There is a dump near the campground entrance, a picnic area, swimming beach, playground, and 25+ miles of hiking trails.

There is no-cost dispersed camping about 5 miles from the Lake Choctaw campground, also in Tombigbee National Forest.

Small, quiet campground made for an enjoyable time. Elec/water hookups, dump station. Each site contained a picnic table, grill, firepit and was gravel. Ours was level with a view of the lake. Plenty of space around our site. Showers are closed but toilets' & sinks available. We did not go to the bath house. 2.5 mile walk around the lake on a gravel path with benches to stop and rest a bit. The lake is currently closed to fishing. Campground host greeted up promptly and was readily available. We will camp here again.

We were a bit skeptical about coming here since there were no reviews....but....we hit the JACKPOT!! Nice long, level sites...most with a view of the lake. Each site has water and electric hook up...dump station is available, as well. Nightly rate is $20, but Access pass is $13.... Quite a few trails. There was no fishing because the lake had been drained a couple years ago, but there is a small beach area. The camp host is very nice...informative and helpful. We would absolutely come back!
