This place was open, and really well taken care of. Our camp site had an amazing view overlooking the lake from about 200' above the water level. There are some well maintained walking trails around the park, and fishing sports. Showers, and laundry available for a small fee. We also had to pay a $9 day pass fee for the state park.

When you are in a place this nice how is it possible to be not be grateful!

The biggest negative was they were in the process of putting in new pavement so the campground roads and some of the sites were rough but they will be done in the spring. We had a peek-a-boo view from our site and it was level. The bathrooms are clean, coin showers, nice staff. There's a nice hiking path from the campground with awesome views of the lake and mountains in the distance. It would be great if you could hike down to the water. No shade at our site. Fluctuating T-Mobile service between 1-2 bars.

Arrival - No problems with arrival after booking through Reserve America. Finding the spot was a little maddening with all the road construction within the park.
Tips - We drove from the Great Sand Dunes NP and, while taking state highway 12 (Highway of Legends Scenic Byway) over Cuchara Pass was beautiful with the Aspens and dramatic rock formations, I would caution those who are not accustomed to mountain driving against it. The pass is two-lane from La Veta to Trinidad, winding, with steep grades and average required speeds of 25 mph; it was about 2 hours over the pass from La Veta to Trinidad. Save yourself some stress, time, and wear-and-tear on your vehicle and take highway 160 to I-25.
Favorites - Sites, sounds, and smells of the surrounding mountains, the hidden high mountain lakes, Aspens, dramatic rock formations. Trinidad Lake surrounded by impressive mesas.
Negatives - The road construction within the park, nothing is advertised on any site. Glad to see maintenance being done but, it would have been nice to know before hand. Construction noise begins nice and early at 0800 and continues all day until 1700.

But the shower facility was new, clean, and warm. Coin operated shower. Also a laundry room with 2 washers and dryers in the building. Electric pedestal worked fine. Would like to stay here again and explore the trails. Overall a good stop.

But WARNING, this is not a safe spot for youngsters who do not understand danger without being told. Straight back from my car there’s a steep trail that is rocky and not packed. It winds behind site 30 and down to the lake. One way. I’d stay here again.

Best campsites IMO are #48-45, along the lake overlook. There is no swimming in Trinidad Lake, although boats, kayaks, and paddleboards are allowed. Easy access to the town of Trinidad- about 5 miles. In August, veterans pay no park admission fee (ordinarily $$9) which is separate from camping fee.
