Although the regular campground area was gated off, there is a good-sized parking area outside the gate. We camped for the night in our 25-foot class C, with no issues. Some road noise from the freeway, which is pretty close, but quiets down through the night. We’ve stayed here several times before, when the campground by the lake was open, and it’s great. But my reason for posting this time is because it’s hard to find campgrounds open through the winter, but this one is still usable even if the regular sites are closed.

Here’s how you can camp for free in Washington State at Caliche Lakes with a Discover Pass. This is a great option if you’re driving on highway 90 and in my case I was coming from Pullman Washington, heading home to Seattle after a work event and thought this would be a great spot to get a quick overnight car camp in.
In addition to car camping, you can easily get a small to midsized RV in this location and if you wanted to, you can even tent camp there.
The nice part about Caliche Lakes is that it is right off of the highway and if you have a Discover Pass, then staying there is absolutely free. In fact, based on their website, I believe you can even stay there up to 21 days for free!
Here’s the 411 on the trip:
- I stayed there 1 night and with my annual Washington State Discover Pass, it was free
Based on their website it also looks like you can stay there up to 21 days for free
It’s first come first serve basis with about 5-10 places to park I would guesstimate
- Cell service was great. I have AT&T
- The facilities: There’s not a lot there. There is a “pit” toilet and most of the sites have some form of fire-ring on them. You can fish there, I saw several folks do that, most just come and fish and leave.
I found the location on https://www.campendium.com/caliche-lake
According the website:
“The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) provides active management for more than 1 million acres of publicly owned land and over 500 water access areas throughout the state. Our vision is a Washington where fish and wildlife thrive in healthy habitats, and where people experience and enjoy our state's natural gifts for generations to come.”
For a quick overnight or short amount of time, for free you can’t beat it.

This area isn’t much of a campground and you wouldn’t want to spend an extensive amount of time at but I stayed here for two nights while breaking up a long trip. I was the only one here during the two evenings during the weekday. Did have some day visitors fishing in the late afternoon and evenings but everyone is always packed up for sunset. There’s not much to do in the area other than fish. There is a pit toilet if needed and had great AT&T cell service. Would recommend this for a night or two at a time

Easy to access from interstate, very pretty ponds with butterflies, flowers and bird life. AT&T was great. Some road noise but not bad, the parking lot had a perfect RV back in site right next to the water. Pit toilet for those that need it.

You can hear the great in the distance. Very doable. Any rv fits but maybe 4 or 5 max....
Tents ok but a bit rocky.
It's a beautiful place on the small lakes..... fairly level as well.
Might be some fish in there who knows. Through it a hook and let us know!

Stayed here over night headed to Colville for turkey season. Easy access for our 30ft camper. A little close to the highway so you hear everything but for free, not bad at all. Morning sunrise and lake front wasn’t bad either. We would stop in again.

A fisherman’s pull out on a pretty little lake surrounded by sage and a bit dusty. We observed about 6 pickups of fishermen. Several different kinds of ducks and a beautiful sunrise. The freeway is close by and we heard it but not as noisy as we expected. Great little spot.

“The gate is closed.”
noted 10/16/2022
We stopped in here to check it out and go birding. The gate was closed. There is still room to park an RV overnight, but you're right next to the interstate. Frenchman's Coulee is a better choice if you want some peace and quiet.
