“Escaped the Desert Heat In this Quiet Mountain Park”

Quiet hilly park with plenty of trees and birds. Nature trails to explore. Clean bathrooms and showers! No TP but clean flush toilets. We stayed one night on the way through the area and were happy to find an alternative to the heat of the desert. Alittle way off 58 but worth it for us.

We stopped here for a night on our way to our next destination. First-come, first-served -- but there were plenty of sites available. The roads through the campground are steep and a bit tight. We didn't familiarize ourselves with the map first, but it would have helped as we drove around looking for a site. We found a nice, secluded site (#55). Our Class B fit fine; leveling required all of our blocks.
Many of the sites were closer together. Most sites didn't seem to offer a lot of privacy from your neighbor. On the other hand, there were a few, like #55, where you could forget other campers were nearby at all!
Campground was generally quiet. Lots of birds, especially near the water spigots. Saw foxes on the way in and another in our campground in the evening.
Walking around the campground definitely takes some energy. There's not a level road in the place. We walked to the entrance from our site, to pay the camping fee after we found our spot -- but we forgot a pen so had to hike back to the site and down again!
Cell service in the site itself was minimal and nothing inside the camper. Walking around the campground in the open got sometimes usable service.
Didn't use the bathrooms, but the campground overall was clean.

We stayed here several years ago after baking ourselves in Death Valley - just needed to get some altitude and cool off! The road up was narrow and windy, but we did ok. We have a long bed Dodge extended cab truck and a 19' Rpod trailer - we drove up and found a decent enough level site where we did not have to un-hook. For one or two nights, we prefer to stay hooked up. It was a hoof back down & up to pay, but exercise is good, right? The wildflowers were beautiful - nice walking, hiking trail. Can't remember the facilities much, but we would definitely go back. Would love to winter camp here!

The good: this is a beautiful wooded county park above the town of Tehachapi. If you’re a tent camper, this might be a cool place to camp. If you’re a van or teardrop camper, youve got a shot at a good experience.
The rest:
If you camp in anything bigger than a van or a teardrop, go elsewhere.
The road up to the park is steep, narrow and winding. Its clear that small rockfalls and slides are common along sections of this access road. Once you enter the park, it only gets worse. Steeper. Narrower. Tighter turns.
Campsites are clustered in small groups as you work your way through the park. I doubt that more than one site in the whole place could fit anything larger than a van or a teardrop trailer. None of the sites even approximate level.
Most toilets are composting, though above the Tehachapi Mountain trailhead we did find a couple of flush toilets inside what looks like a run-down shed and some old tired indoor showers in a nearby building that might work.
Water faucets are scattered about the campground in a fairly random way.
