Question about Soap Creek Dispersed Camping

izzyos asked on 1/14/2023

How is the road turnoff? On satellite, it doesn't look well marked besides the two track. I'm just worried about slowing down in advance to turn and an aggressive driver behind me rear-ending me or pulling out to go around in the other lane while I turn. (Only paranoid because, I get it, long desert hauls can be exhausting and low on patience.)

<> If approaching from the west headed east, pass Cliff Dweller's Lodge on left, cross bridge, and go uphill about 1.7 miles. At top of hill highway curves to left and Soap Creek pull-off is on right set back from highway (first gate on right after crossing bridge). Enter pull-off immediately and diagonally to mitigate 6" drop off pavement and incline of pull-off. Continue diagonally across moderate drain channel and then turn directly toward gate (opens away from highway). <> If approaching from east headed west, pass large pull-off area on left bordered with large rocks, continue 0.5 miles on straight highway. As highway begins gentle curve to right, Soap Creek pull-off is on left. Enter pull-off immediately and diagonally to mitigate 6" drop off pavement and incline of pull-off. Continue diagonally across moderate drain channel and then turn directly toward gate (opens away from highway).

I had the same concerns. If I remember, there is a wide spot pull off with maybe a 3-5 inch drop off from the pavement. It was doable and done with plenty of blinkers… Also go to the right, instead of left unless you like REALLY ROUGH roads. I did the left without my rig attached. There are three rough sections of bedrock going left, but you can also get right up on the edge of the gorge!

The turn off was not well marked, we drove passed it twice! But we arrived at around 11 pm, so try to get their before it gets dark and slow down well ahead of the mile marker that’s close to the entrance. You will see a large dirt parking lot in front of the closed gate where some larger RVs opt to stay for the night.

there is a gate, watch for it. Go to the right after you are in, it is better than the left.
