Overview of Sassafras Hill Designated Dispersed Campsite 3

Campsite is behind locked gate. Lock combination will be assigned upon reservation. Please keep gate closed and locked at all times.

Camping is only allowed at designated campsites in Pinchot State Forest. Reservations and permits are required and can be made online or over the phone. Campfires are prohibited from March 1 - May 25 without authorization from the state forest.

Black bears frequent the area. When not in immediate use, all food, beverages, coolers, cooking utensils, pet food, or other attractants must be kept in a closed, hard-sided vehicle or secured in a bear-proof storage container.

“Beware of bears ”

Overall Rating

The process to obtain a permit was very easy. There is a gate that blocks access to the site however it was not closed upon my arrival. They do provide a lock for the gate with the code supplied in your permit approval email. The site is a large open field that is slanted up and has a big fire pit with a table in the top left corner. Overall the site itself is very nice however there is SIGNIFICANT bear activity in the area. I encountered bears three times in my 2 night stay. First bear growled at me while I was walking the road that leads to the site. I backed away and went back to camp. Second time the bear was just walking on the road just outside the site and the 3rd time a cub came within 20ft of me and just sat and watched me in the brush. I always camp with a firearm and I would highly recommend you do so if you choose to camp here. I was fortunate enough that I was mostly left alone. For that reason alone I will not be staying here again, especially if I was traveling with any small dogs.
