Howard meadows and lake are beautiful spots 1+ hours from Covelo. The roads in are open mainly from Memorial Day through Labor Day, but check with the Forest Service before going. The lake is good for kayaking and fishing, and there is a small dock to help with the launch of your boat.

The meadow campsites are close by, and more quiet than the slightly more popular lake campsites. Sites at the meadow are spread apart farther than the lakeside sites.

Great stargazing and completely quiet with no nearby traffic. There is no fresh water available. The vault toilets seem clean, but early in the season the Meadow toilet was flooded with water as I guess the water table is high.

The road in is rough. Go slow. I do not recommend you bring an RV. There is a tricky spot before you get to the lake turn off, and there are several spots over water and in damp locations that might be a problem for some vehicles. However, we did see a Prius in the campground. My guess is that car got banged up a little on the way in and out.

There is no cell service. You'll lose your signal at the high spot on the road about an hour before you arrive at the campground.
