As a full-time RVer, I’ve spent a total of 5 months dry camping at various locations in Moab - goose island, horsethief, dispersed camping all over, etc. These campgrounds are in full sun and may be less ideal in the summer months (when a river side spot at Goose Island would be more desirable), but in fall they are perfect. The view from my campsite is unbeatable, with the horizon layered with petrified dunes, canyon wall, and finally snow capped La Sal mountains. Strong enough AT&T and VZ signal in D loop to run my work VPN without issue.

The Sand Flats Recreation Area is just a few miles from downtown Moab, but it feels like you are in the wilderness. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is a busy area. This is due to the amazing mountain biking and 4x4 activities in the area. You can mountain bike and enjoy 4x4s right from the campgrounds.
Because of the popularity of this area, you’ll do best if you arrive on a Monday through Thursday. The “Campground Full” sign was up for the weekend we were there in late September. However, if you arrive and find it full, there is an Overflow Camping area. The area is located about two miles down on the left side of Sand Flats Road. Fires aren’t allowed in this overflow area, but it does give you a place to stay until a site opens up.
There are 9 separate camping loops in the park. Some require 4x4 to access, so those without 4-wheel drive want to stick to Loops A, B, C, D and E. Technically Loop J does not require 4x4 access, but it is pretty far down Sand Flats Road, through some sketchy dirt road sections. There weren’t many level spots in loop D, and it seemed like those with the biggest rigs stuck to loops A and B.
We chose the Sand Flats Area over potentially quieter campgrounds because of the Verizon 4G coverage, which was good enough in Loop D for me to work while camping there. Note that not all of the campground loops have the same cell service. The campground loops closest to the entrance have the best cell service.
After reading some other reviews I was concerned it was going to be very noisy. We found a site on the back of Loop D and were pleasantly surprised by the quiet. In the mornings and in the evenings when activity was starting up or winding down we did hear 4x4s on Sand Flats Road, but otherwise it was very quiet.
We were awoken one night by a coyote howling close by, but we didn’t see any wildlife other than rabbits while there.
There is no water in the Sand Flats Area. We filled our water jugs at the Lions Transit Hub which are at the junction of Rt 191 and Rt 128. We showered at the Moab Aquatics Center for $5.00.
While staying in Moab, we mountain biked, road biked, and hiked all but one day. If you are interested in the routes we selected and their highlights, those can be found on our blog post https://ridingroadsandtrails.com/2017/10/10/roadtrip-moab-fall-2017/. I will say here that the Slick Rock Trail is amazing. If you don’t believe you have the skills for the area, try the Practice Loop, which is still difficult, but worth the experience.

If you are into extreme 4x4 offroading or extreme mountain biking, this is the place for you. We are personally in love with Moab, and this was a great basecamp for getting out and exploring. It's 10 minutes from the downtown area, which makes it convenient for groceries and things. Excellent Verizon coverage here as well. With our booster and Omni antenna, we saw speeds of 15mbps down.
We got here Sept 5th, 2015 and it was still hitting the upper 90's during the day. So plan accordingly.
If you are looking for a free dump station and potable water, look no further than the Maverick on the corner of Fourth and Main street heading towards the campground.
Overall we would stay here again. And most likely will.

There really are not that many sites that will fit larger rigs. We have a 27' Airstream and had to hunt for a good one. A, C, & D loops are your best bets, but we got the best Verizon coverage in D loop as its on top of the hill. In fact, D1 is probably the best site in the entire place. Its a HUGE pull through and fairly level. In fact, we fit TWO Airstreams in our site at one point when we rescued a friend from the rain.
The surface is all red clay/dirt so things get pretty messy when it rains. D loop is right at the end of the pavement, so after that the road gets pretty rutted. This is a very popular OHV area (jeeps, dirt bikes, etc.) but it was fun to watch them and the noise didn't bother us. We also managed to get out and ride the world famous Slickrock trail (the practice loop anyway) a few times.
Our kids enjoyed tons of rock scrambling and the scenery out here is just amazing. We were content to just sit for many of our days, but there's a ton of hiking and mtn biking nearby, Arches National Park, and the town of Moab has some really great food.
In town there's a free dump station at the gas station, or we also paid $5 for a dump and fill at the Farm and City Feed & RV Supply. Gearheads Outdoor Store has free and easy water with a huge sink to fill up your water jugs. There's also a paid water spigot inside City Market.
Using our Wilson Booster we easily got 5 bars of Verizon LTE - definitely lots of movie streaming going on in the evenings. :)
There was a ton of micro trash at our site, so before we left we had the kids run around and pick up a bagful or two of garbage. Leave it better than you found it!
We will definitely be back!
